Jemina Navarrete is the winner of Miss Universe 2010. Miss Mexico wins the title of Miss Universe, Yahoo! News reports. The contestant is from a country which is hardly known for its dominance in the world-renown competition, but turned the tables last night.
Standing at 5-foot-8 1/2, Jemina Navarrete, 22, is typical for a Miss Universe winner. She won the overall swimsuit competition and the evening gown competition.
Miss Mexico and the other 82 contestants were judged by a panel of judges including: actresses, Jane Seymour and Chynna Phillips; actors William Baldwin and Chazz Palminteri; magician, Criss Angel; MSNBC anchor, Tamron Hall; drummer, Sheila E.; supermodel, Niki Taylor, and Olympic gold medalist, Evan Lysacek.
Jemina Navarrete impressed the Miss Universe judging panel when Evan Lysacek asked the contestant what her opinion is of parents allowing children unsupervised internet use.
Miss Mexico answered through an interpreter, “I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time. We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”
In addition to winning the Miss Universe 2010 title, Jemina Navarrete won list of prizes including an undisclosed salary, a New York luxury apartment – all expenses paid, jewelry, clothes and shoes for her role as the pageant winner, and a scholarship good for one year to the New York Film Academy in addition to housing once her reign is over.
Miss Mexico replaces Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in a statement after Navarrete’s win, “Her triumph is a source of pride and satisfaction for all Mexicans, who see in her the fruits of perseverance.”
Jemina Navarrete is excited over her Miss Universe 2010 win.
“I imagine that they’re all going crazy in Mexico right now,” she said. “I’m extremely proud and I’m sure they’re very proud, too.”
