Jennifer Grey of “DWTS” actually lost her ambition after the premiere of “Dirty Dancing” in 1987, Good Morning America reported. When she and then boyfriend, Matthew Broderick were in a severe car accident in Ireland, Broderick was seriously injured and two others died. Grey fought a great deal of guilt over the accident and lost her ambition the very same week “Dirty Dancing” opened.
“Dirty Dancing” to “Dancing with the Stars” Story
Grey endured an unbearable amount of emotional trauma after the collision, pushing her into shut down mode. As “Dirty Dancing” made her a star, she withdrew from the spotlight. For 20 years, the actress suffered unimaginable pain and put the breaks on her career.
Because ligaments in the back of her neck were ripped so severely, Jennifer would have a headache so bad four days in a row, she could barely open her eyes. She couldn’t move from the shoulders up or her neck would go into painful spasms.
It wasn’t until she went in for a check-up to be on “Dancing with the Stars,” that Jennifer’s pain subsided with treatments.
Grey went to neurological spinal surgeon, Dr. Robert Bray, Jr., who said that her spine was literally falling off.
“One good fall or rear-end accident, or throwing her head suddenly, it could have done serious damage to her spinal cord,” Dr. Bray said – meaning she could have faced complete paralysis.
With several surgeries, Dr. Bray removed the damaged disc and by screwing in a titanium plate to stabilize area around Jennifer’s spinal cord.
In addition to that, Jennifer Grey had a cancerous limp removed from her thyroid. What a year the actress has had before joining “DWTS.”
“DWTS” Brings Jennifer Grey’s Ambition Back
Now that Jennifer Grey is in another “Dancing” production, her ambition is back in full swing. Pardon the pun. Though her “DWTS” pro partner, Derek Hough, has to formulate their choreography in accordance to the moves she can actually do, Jennifer Grey doesn’t look like she’s lacking anything in her moves whatsoever.
