Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman tonight? Set your DVR’s. It’s going to happen, according to the official David Letterman facebook page. Phoenix is apparently going to reveal a little info on a documentary he made about his real life adventure of leaving his acting career behind to pursue a hip hop or rap career.
Joaquin returned to David Letterman to explain his previous wacky appearance was all in fun and for a movie. Here are some video clips of his appearance last night on TV Squad. Casey Affleck had explained to Jay Leno that it was all about making a mockumentary earlier this week here.
The last time Joaquin Phoenix was on the David Letterman show was February 11, 2009. It was a very odd occurrence with Joaquin chewing gum and barely speaking during the entire interview segment. The Joaquin Phoenix Letterman video can be found on the Letterman Facebook page or on YouTube here.
In fact, the Joaquin Phoenix Letterman video has garnered over 1 million hits on YouTube from his February 2009 appearance. It was so awkward it was a can’t miss Late Night moment.
Phoenix showed up during the appearance with a full beard and shaggy hair. It was not the look that fans were accustomed to when Phoenix played the role of Johnny Cash in “Walk The Line” or any of his other roles.
Letterman poked fun at Phoenix during that last appearance in 2009. What can we expect from the Joaquin Phoenix Letterman appearance tonight? Will Joaquin be off the wall and subdued beyond belief–or will Joaquin kind of return to man fans grew accustomed to on the big screen? The jury is out on what to expect from a guy who drastically has changed his looks and his personna.
It’s going to be interesting to see what Joaquin Phoenix looks like first of all. His last appearance on Letterman provoked Dave to ask him, “what can you tell us about your days with the Unibomber?”
Joaquin hardly grinned during the entire clip in 2009 as Letterman continued to poke fun at his new look.
In fact, Phoenix didn’t really crack a full smile until the very last seconds of the show when Letterman finally made him smile a bit.
There was a stark difference in the video of Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman in 2009 and past appearances like this video from a few years ago when he actually announced he was retiring from acting. The difference is startling. Phoenix goes from his clean cut and talkative image to being very reserved and almost grizzly. Was it a publicity stunt to make this new documentary which he plans to talk about? Or was it a complete change in lifestyle? The Joaquin Phoenix change is one of the more bizarre Hollywood stories ever. The irony is that Joaquin Phoenix will probably have a movie made after his odd transition at some point–could Joaquin actually play himself in the movie? It’s a role he was certainly made for. Let’s hope he actually spits out a complete sentence and explains his bizarre change when he appears on David Letterman tonight. I can’t imagine his appearance tonight could be more awkward than what we witnessed in 2009.
