As if we needed MORE proof how awesomely cool Johnny Depp is, he goes and outdoes himself. Or should I say Captain Jack Sparrow does. While in London shooting the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, Depp stopped by Meridian Primary School in Greenwich in full Jack Sparrow costume in response to a note he received from nine year old Beatrice Delap. The note read “Captain Jack Sparrow, At Meridian Primary School, we are a bunch of budding young pirates and we were having a bit of trouble mutiny-ing against the teachers, and we’d love if you could come and help,” and signed it “a budding pirate.” The note was complete with a drawing of a black skull and crossbones flag on the bottom.
Depp’s appearance was unscheduled, but the staff at Meridian was able to pull everything together in time for him to speak. It looks like they staved off mutiny at least for one day. Captain Jack pulled Beatrice up for a hug and showed the rest of her classmates her letter. “He asked where I was in the audience,” she told London Tonight TV news. “I put my hand up and then I had to go up and he gave me a hug. He said, ‘Maybe we shouldn’t mutiny today because there are police outside monitoring me.” All in all, I’d say that’s an experience she’ll be unlikely to forget anytime soon.
With all the talk of other celebrities demanding large amounts of money for appearances; even staged photographs, its refreshing (but not surprising) to see Johnny Depp do something so awesome for a young girl and the rest of her classmates. With all the attention people like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton are getting, it’s great to see press for someone actually doing something good. Actors in our society are looked at as role models, like it or not, and someone like Johnny Depp proves that some of them are actually worthy of being looked up to. Other celebrities with half as much talent a Johnny Depp demand money; Depp gives it freely to children’s charities and unpaid events such as this. He’s always been called unique, but this time the word applies to being so different from other actors in terms of priorities and his head and heart being in the right place. Young Hollywood; take notice.
I think Captain Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp both get an A+ for the year.
