Six-time All-Pro NFL linebacker Junior Seau was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital early Monday after driving his Cadillac Escalade off a cliff north of San Diego. Junior Seau was driving home early in the morning after being released by the Oceanside Police. Seau had been arrested around midnight the earlier evening for suspicion of domestic abuse.
In a statement released by the Oceanside Police Department, Junior Seau was not home when dispatched police arrived at his Oceanside residence the previous evening. Seau reportedly was in contact with his 25-year-old girlfriend when police arrived at the house. After returning to his home, police promptly arrested Seau without incident.
Junior Seau was retuning home after being released by the authorities when the accident occurred. According to the popular tabloid TMZ, Seau told police that he was not trying to commit suicide. But rather that he fell asleep on the ride home from San Diego County jail facility.
The 41-year-old former football star suffered non-life threatening injuries in the accident according to a police statement obtained by the LA Times. Junior Seau’s live-in girlfriend was reported to have sustained only minor injuries in the previous night’s verbal dispute. Her injuries did not require medical treatment.
No evidence of drug or alcohol use was found in the car, according to Bloomberg News. Junior Seau was given a blood test and police are investigating the cause of the accident.
