The American Music Awards have just announced their nominees for 2010, and they are loaded with the most popular singers and songwriters today. Rapper Eminem is nominated in five categories, as is the hot country group Lady Antebellum, leading all nominees according to USA Today. Justin Bieber got the second most nominations with four, followed by Usher, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, and B.o.B. with three apiece. The American Music Awards happen annually and the public has a say in who wins awards in 19 categories. In what is truly a popularity contest, categories are labeled as “Favorite…” something. Both individuals and groups are nominated in separate categories.
Fans can vote on the ABC website from now until Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, for the awards show that will air live on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. ET. Don’t be surprised if Justin Bieber fans overload ABC’s servers on a regular basis.
If my teenage daughter had her way, she would vote for Justin Bieber one million times. Surely he will be a fan favorite since he has won the accolades of such popular names as Kim Kardashian and Oprah Winfrey. Even my wife likes him. I can see why.
Justin deserves every award he can muster. He has legions of fans and is truly a rags-to-riches story. At age 12, his mom released videos of the superstar singing. Big names such as Justin Timberlake and Usher (also nominated for the AMAs this year) noticed and he was signed to a record label. The rest is history.
But Justin Bieber’s awards success is far from guaranteed. Three of the awards for which he is nominated also go against Eminem. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are also in some of the same categories. But Justin’s charm may win over his legion of teenage fans. Armed with cell phones, each and every 12-to-16-year-old girl in America will be voting for Justin Bieber every chance they get.
Even if Justin wins in only one category it will be Breakthrough Artist of the Year. The other categories will have more competition. But never underestimate determined teenage fan girls, such as my daughter. They know how to vote early and often. Like a troop of Girl Scouts, girls will mobilize and fan out to make sure the block is scoured for cookie prospects.
Why not? Anyone who has this kind of positive effect on my daughter has my attention. My son doesn’t quite understand the allure of pop stars, but he will swoon over someone eventually. My daughter’s friends and even her boyfriend will vote for Justin (because she told him to). Just like his YouTube videos, word of mouth of his nomination will spread far and wide to lead Justin Bieber to victory at the 2010 American Music Awards.
