After watching several behind the scenes and creating popstar-type shows, my attention was drawn to something that I never expected to see… a karaoke machine. The first time this occurred, I assumed that the stage had been used for a karaoke banaza the night before. I did not really get a good look at the machine. I mean, even I can sing a song by heart after hearing it repeatedly. Once the musical accompaniment starts, what I have yet to remember comes surging back through my mind. So I wrote it off, until I saw this machine again. A singer rehearsing, his band was on break, but his karaoke machine was cued up.
Once this happened a couple more times, I posted an inquiry on craigslist hoping that someone would confirm that they too had seen these in other shows. My question was never answered and I am assuming that no one that truly knows the answer to this is willing to divulge this secret: Popstars lip-sync to their music on stage with the lyrics gliding by on their karaoke machines. How much can be pumped into these machines? How much easier can the life of a rockstar be if they do not even have to remember the lyrics to the songs they are famous for singing?
Note that I said ‘famous for singing’ since most popstars do not even write their own music, let alone lyrics anymore.
Haven’t you ever wondered how singers get up on stage and perform completely different sets every night and never miss a word?
These karaoke machines look like the rest of the amplifiers and speakers that are on-stage. You can only see the lyrics if you are standing on stage. The words are only visible to those standing directly in front of them, no screaming fans, no overheads cameras, no one but the forgetful karaoke rockstars.
Clearly, with the power that media continually reigns over society, the least expensive way to be discovered as a karaoke rockstar is to do karaoke. Try out different venues with different stage sizes, lighting, and so forth. Occasionally, perform in costume – something that truly fits your vibe and that of your song choices. Have friends videotape you and post it on My Space or You Tube. From there, it is just a matter of luck, as opposed to dumping tons of money into an agent. This way you can keep your day job while building up your own career as a Karaoke Rockstar!
