The Katy Perry SNL gig came just in time for the pop star. In fact, Katy Perry’s appearance on SNL came just in time for the show, as SNL now had the singer as a source of comedy. The show hired the singer for their season premiere due to the massive success she had over the summer. But, by luck or coincidence, she was in the headlines for other reasons just days ago. Thanks to an unparalleled decision by Sesame Street, the Katy Perry guest spot was used to show something even more inappropriate for PBS.
Just days before Perry was to sing on Saturday Night Live, she got in big trouble for singing on Sesame Street. A duet with Elmo was cut from a future episode because too much of her cleavage appeared exposed. Although she’s shown a lot more of it in other venues, the amount shown was too much for the Children’s Television Workshop.
Therefore, the appearance was anticipated for something more than her singing. Since the show didn’t have to worry about cleavage standards on late night, they could get away with having Perry show it. In fact, she did that and more in a very ironic outfit during a sketch.
With Amy Poehler back as host, the show revived her “Bronx Beat” recurring sketch with Maya Rudolph early on. But the biggest joke came when Perry arrived as a “developing” Bronx teen with a revealing, Elmo-themed shirt on.
The Katy Perry cameo then proceeded with the expected cleavage jokes – with one seemingly borrowed from Russell Brand’s Twitter page. Instead of getting in trouble with Sesame Street, Perry’s character was in hot water with the library, although Poehler and Rudolph’s characters stuck up for her.
The sketch was just one of many with notable cameos, with David Paterson, Justin Timberlake, Tina Fay, Jimmy Fallon and others popping by during the night. But in addition to her revealing cameo, the gig also required Perry to sing old favorites “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream”
It is a rare thing to be considered inappropriate for Sesame Street, yet those same qualities are most ideal for Perry. Despite her newfound hot water, the original Sesame Street sketch is still easy to find online, and now her mocking of it will be a big Internet search item as well.
Although Katy Perry was the SNL musical guest, she wound up being more of a source for comedy than many expected days ago. But the show may not stop including musical guests in sketches, as Kanye West is coming by next week.
