It was November 5th, 2008. The votes are being counted to see who won the race for mayor of Sacramento. It is a runoff election because on the primary election neither candidate received the majority of the vote. The votes were tallied and Kevin Johnson is the newly elected Mayor of Sacramento. Kevin Johnson has gone from being a National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star to mayor of Sacramento.
Kevin Johnson had an outstanding NBA career. He was a three time NBA all-star. He was a five time All-NBA selection. He won the most improved player award in 1989. He for three straight seasons averaged 20 points per game and 10 assists joining Oscar Robertson and Isiah Thomas as the only players in league history to accomplish that feat for three consecutive seasons.
Kevin Johnson had a lightning first step and great athleticism. For instance, he in the 1995 NBA playoffs completed a remarkable dunk over the 7 foot Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets even though he only stands 6 feet 1 inch tall. Equally important, he helped lead the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals in 1993. However, they lost the NBA Finals series to Chicago Bulls 4-2.
Kevin Johnson made a difference off the basketball court during his NBA career. He in 1989 founded the St. Hope Academy in Sacramento to benefit youth by providing educational, cultural and spiritual opportunities. St. Hope has dramatically improved Oak Park though its holistic community development approach. It has made a major economic impact and contribution in the community. St. Hope has started and attracted the creation of 20 businesses throughout the community resulting in nearly 300 jobs.
St. Hope also opened St. Hope public schools a pre K-12 independent public charter school system that is comprised of seven schools. Kevin Johnson was recognized by president George H.W. Bush because of his work in the community in 1992 as one of the 1,000 points of lights. He also won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award from the NBA. Likewise, he was named by USA today as one of the most caring athlete’s in 1995 due to his humanitarian efforts amid contributions to the community.
Kevin Johnson has made a successful transition from being a professional athlete to mayor. There have been several other professional athletes that have had successful careers in politics. Bill Bradley was selected to the basketball hall of fame in 1982. He is a former three term democratic United States senator from New Jersey. Steve Largent was inducted into the professional football hall of fame in 1995. He served in the United States House of Representatives for Oklahoma from 1994 until 2002. Dave Bing was named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players. He was elected mayor of Detroit on May 5, 2009.
Kevin Johnson had a successful NBA career. He is now ready to take advantage of his opportunity to be mayor so that he can make a positive impact on Sacramento. He truly cares about his hometown of Sacramento. He has shown that before he became mayor when he founded the St. Hope Academy. Kevin Johnson has went from being a NBA all-star to mayor of his hometown.
