Keith Olbermann MSNBC host was suspended without pay for violating corporate rules against making campaign contributions. Olbermann made donations to Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, and Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway. NBC policy does not explicitly prohibit employees from donating to political candidates but it does require them to obtain approval before doing so. Apparently Olbermann was aware of the rule but chose to make the contributions without notifying the proper authorities nonetheless.
It may seem a petty punishment to the disinterested observer. After all, MSNBC exists for the sole purpose of promoting Left wing ideology. Does it really make any difference if one of their on air personalities makes an allowable donation but neglects to dot his “i” and cross his “t” in the process? Actually yes.
Rules are rules. And frankly, this is one time I agree with MSNBC. There I no indication MSNBC plans to fire Kieth Olbermann so the worst case scenario for Olbermann is the loss of a few thousand dollars. I doubt Olbermann’s reputation will suffer; indeed, he has the opportunity to be cast as a martyr for the Leftist cause – courtesy of the extreme leftist MSNBC! In the long run both MSNBC and Keith Olbermann will benefit. The network because they show they actually care (something) for legitimate standards and Olbermann because he will have a war story to tell his grand kids someday – assuming he has grand kids.
A week or two from now, probably no one will remember the incident. It is a blip on the cultural radar that will fade into the distance as larger, more important issues arise. For now it provides a welcome diversion for the left – and a reason to smile for the Right: Keith Olbemann making donations to Democrats – who would of thought?
