Or, you can almost murder him or her, like I did.
How to (almost) Murder your new Lover
Flashback: Fifteen years ago I prepared my first romantic dinner for the lovely man whom I later married. During the dinner process, I almost murdered my new lover via spinach strawberry salad.
Immediately following three bites of salad, Hubert’s face turned strawberry red and blotches began breaking out. I knew the signs and raced to the medicine cabinet, grabbed the Benadryl, poured a glass of water, stuck two tablets in his hand and shouted, “Here, take these!”
I raced around the apartment and located my car keys in the event he went into anaphylaxis, which would necessitate a flying trip to the Emergency Room. (Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction to a causative agent.) The causative agents were: strawberries and peanuts.
Fortunately, I did not murder my new lover. The Benadryl did the trick and we were able to resume dinner, sans spinach strawberry salad.
When I ask Hubert why he’d eaten the salad, knowing he was allergic, he hung his head down and responded, “The salad was so pretty and looked like it took a lot of effort to prepare.”
Needless to add, the man was totally, completely in love with me. Truth is, you don’t have to take a lot of effort to prepare my killer spinach strawberry salad. But, girlfriend, check out your new lover’s potential allergies before proceeding.
With a little tweaking of the ingredients, I still serve spinach salad. I’ll show you several variations.
Killer Spinach Strawberry Salad
Ingredients: 1 bag baby spinach (even if your bag reads “triple washed” rinse the spinach several times in a colander, unless you want to murder him/her via salmonella. (Salmonella, bacteria which can cause food poisoning.)
About 6 sliced strawberries
Unsalted Peanuts (enough to sprinkle on top of salad)
Poppy seed or Honey Mustard Dressing
Preparation: About 30-minutes prior to serving, place two salad plates in freezer. After your lover arrives, arrange spinach on salad plate. Sprinkle strawberries and peanuts prettily on top.
For a nice touch, pour the salad dressing of your choice in a glass syrup pitcher or in a tiny bowl.
Instead of strawberries try mandarin oranges or pineapple chunks.
Substitute walnuts or slivered almonds for peanuts.
Let me know if you impressed your new love interest with my killer strawberry spinach salad. And, pretty please, with strawberries on top, find out about his/her potential allergies prior to making it or you too may (almost) murder your lover!
