Don’t you love watching kids play? It’s so much fun to see the way they run and jump, giggle and laugh. There are somethings you just know every kid likes, such as a slide or a swing set. When you purchase these types of entertainment for kids you’re bound to win a few smiles. Don’t have money to buy large, expensive things for your child right now? You know, there’s another thing that most kids love and that you can easily provide: a play house! It’ll cost little to no money for you to set up a place where a child or two can hide, nap or just sit and think.
Use your kitchen table as the main part of the house and the rest will be really easy to accomplish. A square or rectangular table is perfect for making a play house but you can get by, if you must, with a round table. Choose a cloth that will cover the table and hang all the way to the floor. A too-large tablecloth, a sheet, or something similar works great to cover the table and create the walls of the house. Although the kitchen table and cover together make a hiding place that’s useable there are many other things you can do to make your child’s play house one to remember.
A folded blanket works well to make a floor for the house but there are other things you could use instead. Large foam squares, which interlock to make a huge floor puzzle, are perfect for creating a cover for the bare floor. Or, just lay down a body pillow or some throw pillows so kids don’t sit directly on the floor.
If you want, you can create doors and windows for the table play house. For a door, cut a single slit down one side of the sheet. You can sew a piece of Velcro on so kids can close the door once they’re inside. Or, stitch on a couple of ribbons and kids can tie the door shut.
Make windows by cutting out three sides of a square on the cover. Attach a piece of ribbon across the bottom area of the cutout. Now kids can simply roll the fabric up to open the window or let it down to close it.
Kids like variety and they can have that when it comes to their playhouse. Sew or glue a large piece of clear plastic onto the cover, right beside the door. Kids can make signs that they can put in and take out of the plastic piece. They can make a sign that says “Post Office”, “Library” or even “Keep Out”. The sign can be changed whenever the child feels like it. Make various signs and slide one into the top opening of the plastic pocket.
Kids can spend hours hiding in and under things – it’s one of their favorite things to do when bored! Plan on your child spending lots of time in the fun play house, but whenever you need your kitchen table back, simply remove the cloth and save it for another day!
