This past week we received some sad news, our 11 year old Silky Terrier was diagnosed with a Mast Cell tumor, which is a commonly found cancer in dogs. Mast cells are part of the animals defense system, but when they go haywire, reacting to pollens as parasitic invaders in the body, they send out granules of histamines that can lead to inflammation.
My veterinarian said she wanted me to give our dog Benadryl twice a day, to help combat the excessive histamines in my pets body. I told her that due to my own battle with seasonal allergies, I am very familiar with the active ingredient in Benadryl, which is diphenhydramine hydrochloride. For years I took Benadryl for my allergies, but then I found off brands such as the Kroger brand sold at Fred Meyer stores. Kroger Allergy Tablets contain the same ingredients as Benadryl, in the same dosage of 25 milligrams.
Both brands are colored pink, and they are also similar in size. These are small and are easy to swallow, and the caplets that I purchased are much less expensive and they can be cut in half. They also come in capsules, but of course these are hard to half the dosage of, so for me it’s the caplets.
Having taken both Benadryl and the Kroger Allergy Tablets, I can honestly say that I have found no difference between the two products. They both get into my system and start providing allergy relief of sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal stuffiness in as little as thirty minutes.
Since my latest purchase was for my dog in mind, I didn’t really care about the brand, as long as I could cut them in half. The Kroger Allergy Tablets are small, only about one half inch in length, and they are coated with a pink material, but are white inside. They are bitter too, my dog always knows when I try to hide these in her food and she never falls for that old trick. For me, they are easy to swallow, and I stick them down my dogs throat when it is time to give them to her, and she swallows them fine as well.
Kroger makes their Allergy Tablets in different sized packages, but the best value was their 100 count size. This retailed for only $8.99, which was a great price dollar for dollar. Kroger Allergy Tablets is an antihistamine that works well for a variety of allergic reactions. This has not only worked well for my allergies, but it has helped to reduce inflammation when I get stung by a bee, and my doctor seemed confident that they would help my dog battle her Mast Cell tumor.
