Only two and half hours by car, east of Kuala Lumpur lays the city of Kuantan. With its shore line overlooking the South China Seas one of the larger cities on the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsular.
South of the city center flows the Sungai Kuantan (Kuantan river) a wide muddy stream which enables the fishing fleet to come inland. The city center is not really spectacular but as some very interesting sites. So be there the central park and the big mosque, the palace of Kuantan, the 18 hole golf course along the coast. Shopping is plentiful, modern shopping malls, traditional stalls and night markets, the pasar malams.
Telok Chempedak or as the locals call it, TC, is one of the best beaches on the east coast. A nice flowing white sandy beach on both sides border by a headland, rocks and jungle.
To the north of TC travelers can pass the dense jungle through a wooden boardwalk which will bring them to the second and the third beach at Telok Chempedak.
Accommodations in Kuantan
In and around the city center is a variety of accomondations available from some 4 star hotels to 2 star small business hotels. Don’t expect the luxury as in the big city, however the two luxury hotels lay just outside the city center. The 5 star Swiss Garden resort and the Hyatt Regency will pamper guests in luxury. Almost forgotten but well tucked away in the jungle, the Tembeling Resort can be found, brilliant resort to rent an apartment for a week or longer, private beach and private jungle, make Tembeling one of the wonders of Kuantan.
Activities in Kuantan
Activities in Kuantan are not that plentiful, the tourism industry has stayed behind a little in Kuantan, but beach activities and the beaches are wonderful, as are the walks in and around the jungle. The 18 hole golf course in the area attract golf players from all around the globe. The nightlife in Kuantan is almost not excising, unless visiting the hotel bars. The locals are more attracted by the local coffee shops and kopitiams where till late at night friendships and a good cuppa are enjoyed.
Cherating & Kuantan
Cherating has the name of being the ultimate backpackers location on the Malaysian east coast. The fame dates back to the seventies where hippies and backpackers from all around ventured to Cherating. The atmosphere is still there, but it has lost some allure. Basic accommodation and wide quiet beaches still attract thousands every year.
Close to Cherating the Club Med can be found where the luxury traveler will be pampered till he can no more. Luxury accommodation for international clientele is surrounded by traditional Malaysian lifestyle.
Kuantan is one of the forgotten marbles on the Malaysian east coast, a wonderful location to stay for a day or a few days with the family.
