Happy 36th Birthday to one of my fave characters as a little girl, the one and only, Hello kitty. Hello Kitty was created by iconic Japanese designer Yuko Shimizu in November of 1974. Her one illustration of the character eventually spawned a global phenomenon. And 36-years later, the Hello Kitty brand now commands up to five billion-dollars in licensing fees annually, and is adored by grown women and little girls alike.
The Hello Kitty name and face has been seen on everything from apparel and stationary, to toaster ovens, computer gear, and electronics. Most recently Hello Kitty has a new line of Fender guitars, a real Airbus, a line of specialty wines, two amusements parks, a music label, video games, and even checking accounts with checks and credit cards with her name and face. But the Hello Kitty apparel remains a staple in most little girls wardrobes, even 36-years later.
In Taipei, Taiwan, there is a restaurant named Hello Kitty Sweets with most of its dishes and décor centered around the legend. There is also a Hello Kitty themed maternity hospital opened in Yuanlin, Taiwan, where Hello Kitty’s face is on everything from receiving blankets and bed linens, to birth certificate’s and nurses’ uniforms.
I remember my Hello Kitty purses, my favorite Hello Kitty Shirt, my Hello Kitty diary, and my Hello Kitty pencils that I used in elementary school. And now as a mom, I am happy to say that my daughter loves Hello Kitty too. It is funny how a cute little kitty cartoon character can bring back so many memories of a childhood, and how you can share those awesome memories with others. It is really hard to believe that the Hello Kitty has been around that long, and it is amazing to see how popular she still is.
You can find awesome Hello Kitty gear, including her oh-so popular apparel and learn more about the legend of Hello Kitty at www.sanrio.com. The website also features a Hello Kitty Blog, gift ideas for every age, best sellers, and you can also find out more about the other Sanrio characters.
Be sure to also check out the new character designed by iconic Japanese designer Yuko Shimizu called Rebecca Bonbon at www.usarebeccabonbon.com.
From myself and all of your fans, Happy Birthday Hello Kitty!
