Lady Gaga at the VMAs 2010 dominated a show that began with Eminem rapping his song Not Afraid. Marshall Mathers, performing on a massive stage with a nighttime scene of brightly lit skyscrapers as his background, looked fit and in prime form. Rhianna, in a red wig, looking more feminine than in recent past, appeared as Eminem also sang Love the Way You Lie where Rhianna is featured. Later, Eminem won for Best Male Video, but had left the building before his name was announced.
Then out came the host of the MTV Video Music Awards 2010, Chelsea Handler, after a booty spanking skit that included Lindsay Lohan warning Handler not to make a fool of herself. Handler descended the stage in a Lady Gaga parody complete with topless models in red latex. The first time in 16 years the VMAs was hosted by a woman, Chelsea reminded us. It was the year “Justin Bieber’s mom gave birth to her 401K plan,” joked Handler. Be on your “worst behavior” Handler advised and nobody was safe as Handler joked about Taylor Swift, the cast of Jersey Shore, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Kanye West and more. Throughout the show, various scenes of Chelsea making a fool of herself at a celebrity pre-show party skit were shown.
The first award of the 2010 VMAs was presented by Ellen DeGeneres for Best Female Video. Lady Gaga won for Bad Romance. “Tonight, little monsters, we’re the cool kids,” screamed Gaga.
The beautiful Kim Kardashian introduced 16-year-old Justin Bieber, who won Best New Artist. The 2010 VMAs is not content to confine their stars to one arena. Bieber performed outside in front of a huge crowd of screaming girls, dressed in basic black, but wearing a black custom made Bieber baseball jacket. Insert a bit of comedy – the camera cut several times to Chelsea Handler in the crowd, screaming like the young girls around her, holding a Justin Bieber homemade sign. Justin has shown that he has a good voice and good dance moves. Plus, he can play the drums. Is there anything this young mega star can’t do?
There was the old, in the form of Linkin Park and singers like Usher, who at 31 has still got it. And there was the new. Florence Welch, also known as Florence and the Machine, one of the most exciting alternative rock singers since Sinéad O’Connor, performed.
Some singers were lucky to get any airtime at all, such as Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes. And although Katy Perry and Kesha were presenters, they did not perform.
The cast of Glee, including Jane Lynch, presented Lady Gaga with another award at the 2010 VMAs, this time for Best Pop Video for Bad Romance. Gaga, clad in another difficult to walk in dress, said she refused to cut parts of the video because, “We were born this way, baby!” Lady Gaga sang a bit of her Born This Way collection, due out in 2011, when she later also won for the coveted Video of the Year, accepting the award in an outfit that looked like it was made out of red meat. The award was presented by Cher, dressed in the big hair and revealing Bob Mackie type outfit that she wore in her younger days. But Cher, at 64, looked better than most women half her age.
Taylor Swift performed, dressed simply in bare feet and a plain off-white dress. Before she performed, a grainy video of the infamous moment when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift appeared, but there was no actual on stage interaction between the two.
Drake performed with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz. No more Degrassi for Drake. B.o.B. performed with Hayley Williams from Paramore. The two did not meet during the making of their hit song Airplanes, but looked great together on the show.
The much anticipated Kanye West was the final performer. Dressed in bright red with gold chains, he played on a synthesizer before performing Runaway. With ballerinas dancing around him he rapped, “Let’s have a toast for the douche bags. Let’s have a toast for the a**holes…”
