The MTV Video Music Awards have always had some fashion awkwardness, and this year was no different. The MTV Video Music Awards are a time when people can wear outfits that might be making a social or political statement, but does the attention really work?
According to Entertainment Weekly, Lady Gaga showed up at the MTV Video Music Awards wearing a “meat dress,” and it is dominating headlines. Although Gaga won eight awards, the only thing people are talking about is her “meat dress” and the intention behind it. Apparently, Gaga wore the dress as a statement for people to stand up for what they believe in and that we all need to fight for our individual rights and freedom. The dress could also have many different interpretations, which is something Gaga liked about the dress.
The Gaga “meat dress” is similar to when Jennifer Lopez wore the infamous green dress to the 2000 Grammy Awards. According to Entertainment Weekly, Lopez decided to wear a long-sleeved green silk chiffon printed dress with chartreuse leaves.
This dress became instantly famous because of the fact it was really thin, which allowed you to see every beautiful curve that Lopez has. This dress she wore also had a very low-cut neck which seemed to show a lot of cleavage. Although the Grammy Awards were entertaining, everyone seemed to talk all about the dress and how revealing it was.
Lopez is a curvy woman and is proud of all her curves, which showed in the dress she decided to wear that night. Everyone was so intrigued by how she got the dress to stay on properly; she later revealed she used double-sided tape to hold her cleavage in the dress. This dress was certainly pretty and provided a lot of people with some entertainment as well, and turned Lopez into an even bigger icon. Lopez really exploded into infamy after that dress, and it pretty much started her career in music and television. Lopez had nothing but positive reviews from most people when she wore that dress because she was so proud of her curves no matter what other people thought. Lopez showed that night that you do not have to be really skinny to look beautiful and feel good about yourself.
Based on how well Lopez handled the infamous green dress, I see Gaga only getting bigger because of her chosen outfit. The “meat dress” was a political statement, and it could also be interpreted in many other ways, which only makes the dress more interesting. I think Gaga’s image will not be affected negatively by the “meat dress” because she is always wearing something exotic and odd. Gaga is known to have some bizarre fashion choices, so this should not be a surprise to anyone.
Gaga is entitled to make whatever statement she wants to, whether it is through her music or her outfits. I feel Gaga will only get more publicity and become more popular over the “meat dress,” and I think that is a good thing. If Gaga does something to make people talk about an important issue, then good for her, and I am glad she is courageous enough to do it.
