A couple days ago, my wife got home before me and decided to surprise me by making dinner that didn’t come from a box or a restaurant (something that has become the norm since we both started working full time). She decided to make some pork steaks and, as she normally does, she decided to soak them in some marinade.
When I heard she had used Lawry’s Szechuan Sweet & Sour BBQ Marinade, I’ll have to admit I wasn’t overly thrilled. I have had other marinades from this brand and was not a fan of most of them. I’m a person who likes to keep my meat simple; usually with just a few seasonings. Marinades tend to add a bit too much in terms of flavor (I might as well drink them from the bottle since I can’t taste the meat) and this is particularly true with the Lawry’s brand. I think the only one from this brand that came close was the Hawaiian marinade. But, even though it was better than some other brands, it fell a bit short.
However, after trying the Szechuan Sweet and Sour BBQ Marinade, I do now have one from this brand that I do like.
Even though I don’t usually add things to meat other than a few seasonings, I do occasionally enjoy using barbecue sauce; especially if I think the meat I’m cooking is going to be tough and dry. And, that is really all this particular brand of Lawry’s is.
I wouldn’t classify it being as good as other barbecue sauces like Sweet Baby Ray’s (one my brother got me hooked on). But, I did actually enjoy the blend of seasonings in this one. They added flavor to the pork steaks without being the only thing I tasted. In fact, I think this was the first marinade I didn’t attempt to scrape off the meat when my wife wasn’t looking.
Another thing that impressed me about this brand is we were able to marinade all the pork steaks and have the decent flavor I was referring to without having to use the entire bottle. It wasn’t a large bottle so I was actually surprised when I learned we still had half remaining. The ability to get more than one use for the same amount of money will always win points with me.
I don’t recommend marinades very often. But, if you are looking for one, especially one to use with pork, I would recommend this product.
