Most of us have busy lives. We have a lot to say but listening is often very difficult. These days, it’s really easy to not listen to someone who is talking to you. Being a good listener is essential to having a good relationship. I’ll give you some tips on how to be a good listener.
Look Your Partner In The Eye
Unless you’re blind, there is no way that you can convince your partner that you are not listening to him or her when they’re talking to you. It’s rather rude as well to not look at your partner when they are talking to you. Look your partner in the eye when they are talking to you.
“Are you even listening to me??” If you do reflective listening, you likely won’t hear those words from your partner. Reflective listening is like bouncing back and fourth. For example….If your partner says to you, “We never do anything fun together”. You can come back with something like, “You want us to have a life outside of the house and the kids”. You’re not asking a question, you’re just letting him or her know that you heard what they said. You’re pretty much just repeating what your partner just said but in the process of that, you’re letting your partner know that you are listening to every word he or she is saying.
I know that this stuff is easier said than done so I’m going to give you some actual tips.
Take Some Time For You
Whatever you fancy. When you get home from work. Guys, watch some TV, work out. Ladies, take a relaxing bath or meditate for a bit. Do whatever it is that you feel is valuable alone time. One cannot give of themselves to others without first taking some time out for you.
The dinner table is a great place to catch up on your partner’s life. You can take that time to talk about nearly anything. You ideas, your day, make plans, etc. Remember to look your partner in the eye and do some reflective listening.
Good listening is something that you have to learn. Don’t expect to be a perfect listener right away. Practice makes perfect. Spend some time practicing. At the end of the day, ask yourself if you listened today as much as you would have liked. If not, do your best to do a better job the next day. Good luck.
