I have never been very good at praying. Oh, I do it a lot, but it is anything but eloquent. I stumble, I draw blanks, I’m just not good at it. Thank God it is only God who is hearing my prayers. No way would I dare to pray out loud in front of anybody. I know a lady who prays the sweetest prayers. She just sounds like she is talking to a friend. That is what I would love to be able to do.
However, I have learned to do a little better with a strategy I learned in our small group. The acronym PRAY. It helps me to get my thoughts together.
P is for Praise. I begin by praising God, thanking Him for all of my blessings, telling Him that I love Him, acknowledging the never-ending help he gives me.
R is for Repent. I ask for God’s forgiveness for all my shortcomings, big and small. I ask him to forgive me for sharp and unkind words that I’ve used, to forgive me for things I should have done, but didn’t, for things that I did do, but shouldn’t have, to forgive selfishness, and pettiness, for ugly thoughts I have, for whatever I need forgiving for.
A is for Ask. I used to have a little trouble with this one. I could ask for things for other people, but I felt a little bit ashamed to ask for so much for myself. That is, until I learned the “Prayer of Jabez” (another article on my page), and realized that God wants us to ask over and over again for blessings for ourselves. It is not being greedy. God has an infinite number of blessings to bestow upon us, and all we have to do is ASK.
Y is for Yield. This is the one that I realized that I was never doing. Yield means to shut your trap, be quiet, and just listen. Listen to what God is saying back to you. Some people might call it meditating. But you just need to be in a quiet place, and open your heart and open your mind, and let God talk to YOU!
You may not actually hear God speak to you with your ears. Some people say they do, but I have never experienced this, but you will hear Him speak. Just listen, and you will know when you hear him. Later, friends.
