The Motorized LEGO Excavator 8043 is in my opinion one of the best Technic products made in recent years. I’ve always been fascinated by mega machines and this model is a true small scale realistic model of an earth-movin Excavator. Building the model is only half of the fun because once finished, this remote controlled robotic model will provide countless hours of enjoyment!

Building the Excavator was a lot of fun and was definitely time well spent. This model is more challenging then other models because of all the moving parts involved. Likewise, it was also a great learning experience to see how all kinds of chains, gears, motors and actuators work together to make this model come to life. The assembly manual contains 216 pages of instructions that have been separated into 3 different booklets. (The instruction manual can also be downloaded off the LEGO website free of charge. You can take a look at the instruction manual to get an idea of the complexity this model before buying it.) Don’t be discouraged though, it’s not too difficult to construct as long as you pay good attention to the instructions. All 1123 pieces are color coded and the step by step instructions shows where each part goes. There is also a life-sized key of all the parts in the instruction manual. This was very useful because a lot of the parts are similar looking. For example, there are 8 different sizes of gears used in the model and trying to reference them merely by image can become confusing.
The motorized functions are brilliantly designed and are a blast to play with. The wireless remote controls 7 different functions on the excavator. There are 2 linear actuators located at the base of the boom that can be extended or contracted to raise and lower the boom. A third actuator is placed at the top of the boom to move the arm back and forth. Finally a fourth actuator at the end of the arm can be control the bucket so it can dig and scoop. A motor on the cab allows the cab to rotate a full 360 degrees in either direction. Finally there is a motor on each of the caterpillar tracks that will move the excavator in all directions. The tracks can independent of each other so by moving on track forward and the other backward the excavator can turn.
This has to be my favorite LEGO model that I own. It is very realistic looking and makes for a great centerpiece display. Better yet is that the unit comes to life and moves around just like a real Excavator. This model does cost more than your typical model, but when you factor in the time it takes to put together at the enjoyment to be had after completed the price seems worth it. If you like mega machines and moving parts then this model is a must have, and will look excellent displayed on your shelf. Building the model isn’t too difficult and won’t require too much time. So whether you’re buying this model for yourself or for your child as a gift, I would highly recommend it.
