There are growing concerns in view of the high percentage of unemployment rate in this country. This was evident by the past election when voters expressed their frustrations by ousting a high number of incumbents. Perhaps unemployment was the impetus that motivated voters to go to the polls that resulted in the outcome of the election.
Layoffs seem to be the norm these days because it seems every month there is someone being laid off such as, a family member, church member, or a neighbor. It is understandable employees who remain in the workforce are feeling anxious about whether they will be the next pink slip recipient.
Receiving a pink slip could be the best thing that could ever happen to an individual. Perhaps after graduating from college, you remained on a job that you didn’t like, but because there were student loans that needed to repaid, you accepted the first job that agreed to hire you. Subsequently, you remained on the job for numerous years without exploring other employment opportunities. Maybe you had a passion to write a book, or perhaps you always wanted to teach, or pursue a singer career.
This could be your season to explore that passion that has remained dormant in you all of your life. If you find yourself unemployed, don’t get discouraged. Get up each day as if you were going to work each day. Begin a strategy of ways you can pursue your dreams and then outlined those plans on paper. This may be the start of writing a manuscript for that book you longed to write, or phoning a university for an application to enroll in school to begin a new career, or updating your resume in preparation for that job you always wanted.
Establish a goal and time line. Second, keep a daily diary of all the activities you performed each day. I find this to be helpful in keeping you on track of your goal, a way to keep you encouraged by reminding you are not being a slough especially on those days when there seems to be delays. Also, it will help you to evaluate your plans, and will help you to decide if you need to adjust or to delete some of them. Finally, keep a positive attitude especially on those days when your progress seems to be slow or nothing seems to go as plan. At the end of the day, you will be happier pursuing a dream you always wanted versus having remained on a job you really did not enjoy. Remember everything happens for a reason and at a very special season.
