In the new world of MP3 players and digital downloads, we have all seen music stores closing their doors. Nowadays, it seems like every artist has some promotion online, rather than promoting anything in stores anymore. This is the case for Lil Wayne, who released his new album, I Am Not a Human Being, on the Internet. The album has been released in a digital download format and won’t reach stores until Oct. 12, according to Billboard. This comes after a slew of other artists who have also released their music online.
Katy Perry recently promoted her new album, Teenage Dream, by having an exclusive stream of the title song, “Teenage Dream,” live on Facebook in August, according to KatyPerry.com. This generated a lot of buzz for the song, which eventually reached #1 on the Billboard charts. Her album also reached #1, and online promotion like this is a part of the reason. Almost everybody uses some kind of social network on the Internet, and Perry’s promotional team used this fact to their advantage.
Taylor Swift is set to release her album, Speak Now, on Oct. 25. However, in order to generate talk about this new album, she is going to be releasing three singles off the album once a week up until Oct. 25. Also, Swift is going to have these songs on sale on iTunes the day after they are released online. So any Taylor Swift fan will be able preview these songs well before the release of her album and buy them as well, according to CMT. With Swift being such a big artist, the release of her songs before her album is released is just going to get fans more excited for the album.
Usher also released a sampling of his album online before it was released in stores. In July, Usher released his now chart-topping hit, “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” over the Internet days before it even was released for radio play, according to Music Mix. His album Versus didn’t even hit stores until Aug. 24. His song reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 list and is doing well. The success of his pre-release of “DJ Got us Fallin’ in Love” contributed to the good album sales.
The decision by Lil Wayne to release his album, I Am Not a Human Being, online first will bring more excitement to his music. If his album wasn’t being released digitally first, there wouldn’t have been all of this media coverage about him and this decision. Just as these promotional tactics have worked before for other artists, this decision will make his music more of a success when released.
