One of the best places to live in the world (at least for me) is Chicago. The diversity of our neighborhoods, the variety of things to see and do, the down-to-earth people and especially the awesome food make for a lot of fabulous times. As a resident of the Jefferson Park/Portage Park neighborhood for over 20 years, I wanted to share some of my very favorite things to do when you’re in the area.

Sidekicks has been one of my favorite places to hang out in the neighborhood for many years now. It’s a karaoke bar that never fails to put me in a happy place. With over 10,000 songs to choose from, a great kitchen with yummy snacks like pizza, burgers and cheese sticks, and a friendly environment, it’s an ideal choice to please most everyone. Sorry, Sidekicks does not take credit cards, but they do have a free parking lot and plenty of street parking. Even if like me, you don’t sing like Josh Groban, the patrons are very supportive and make you feel like a superstar!

A great word to describe the beloved Portage Theater would be…classic. It’s a huge, wonderful old fashioned theater that holds concerts, film festivals, vintage flicks and special events like the Big Lebowski Fest. A visit to this lovely theater is like stepping back in time.

My Italian blood is always on fire whenever I think about Suparossa. For me, this is my favorite Italian restaurant. They have the best deep dish pizza I have ever tasted, along with tempting and savory pastas, salads, chicken and steaks. The service is good and the ambiance is pretty, yet simple. You will love the wood burning fireplace which adds a warm, cozy feel to the dining area. You can choose to dress up or wear jeans and still feel welcome and comfortable. They have a large parking lot across the street and offer carryout and delivery service.

What would Jefferson Park be without the lovely park that bears its name? This park is the cornerstone of the neighborhood with a little something for everyone. They have a club house with everything from arts and crafts, children’s events, classical concerts and sports activities. In the summer, there is a pool and free summer movies to enjoy with the whole family. One of my favorite events at the park is Jeff Fest which features national and local bands, delicious food and vendors selling all kinds of clothing, jewelry and novely items.
Putting Edge Fun Center

Whether you’re a kid, or an adult that likes to act like one at times (like me!) you will love this place. I went last week and was giddy like a five year old when I walked into this all glow-in-the-dark miniature golf delight. They did a great job with all the far out designs and creatures lurking about on the 18 hole course. There’s a small snack bar and some fun video games where you can win trinkets. (Hey, I actually scored a 53, can you believe it? Look out Tiger Woods!)
