On the eve of the November 2nd, general elections, I just so happened to catch my local news at 11pm. The particular news telecast was from Channel 4 Detroit News, the same channel that hosts a political talk show every Sunday morning.
During the telecast, Channel 4 News was talking about the elections and how important it is to get out the vote, and then they displayed a few graphics that looked like the ballot, but with only Democratic and Republican candidates listed on it.
Not including all the candidates misleads uninformed voters from even realizing there are other candidates from other parties, which most likely would be in the voters’ best interest to vote for. Why would a local news station, that is telecasting their news on our public airwaves, try to deceive us viewers at worse, or add to our ignorance at best?
In our state of Michigan, the Bureau of Elections declares you a candidate, if you qualify as a candidate with the Bureau then you are an official candidate and should receive the same coverage that candidates from the major parties receive over our public airwaves. Once again we voters are presented a false choice, and those of us without the time to fully educate our vote get sucked into voting for the lesser of two evils, resulting in a broken down state. I wonder if Channel 4 News leaves third party candidates off all their “official” political polls also?
I almost feel as if corporate media has so demented our political process, hope for an educated voting public are dwindling quickly. How can tiny, non-corporate financed, true independent candidates ever compete with the local news telecast that reaches thousands of households on a daily basis?
The answer is they can’t, and us hard working voters barely scrapping together enough money to survive end up loosing out when hand-picked candidates from corporation, banks and special interest pollute our state legislator and destroy our American dream.
Shame on Channel 4 News, who has an inherent trust built up with the public, shame on them for breaking this trust in such a sly way, in order to frame the elections for candidates from the Republican and Democratic parties only.
But it is not just Channel 4’s fault; the local news stations receive millions of dollars in revenue from all the political commercials polluting the airwaves during an election cycle. Commercials created almost entirely by Republican or Democratic sponsored groups or directly from the two major parties themselves. Until we take the money out of political campaigns and demand our public stations give an equal amount of free time on the air for all official candidates, we will never have a government for the people.
Instead we will have what we have today; a corporate ran plutocracy that has definitely destroyed wealth and opportunity here in Michigan. As long as we let corporate and private interests control our government we will continue living in a fascist state, where opportunities will be slim and a better tomorrow will always be out of reach for the majority of Americans.
