Situated at West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue in New York City, N.Y., Columbus 72 is a pretty hip and exciting night club in the heart of the Big Apple, perhaps one of the few quality ones that are left in this day and age. Columbus 72 sports a very mixed crowd with the age range varying in between 21 to 61 and this includes Asians, whites, blacks, middle-eastern, Indian, Latinos, and so forth. This makes Columbus 72 a very ideal clubbing spot to be from the get-go. The place is literally like a melting pot, one that’s bubbling underneath. Mind you, the crowd is pretty respectful too for the most part. If your wife were to go out with just her lady friends while you had to work, you won’t have to worry about guys trying to get in her pants.
Drinks run the average New York City price for the most part and they’re pretty well-stocked with a wide assortment to choose from. There’s a total of four rooms: The main music room where pretty much anything from Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, techno, reggae, and so on are played plus there’s a bar in this area; the Latin room; a second bar area with lots of couch space; and then there’s a private lounge room. Thankfully, the main music room is the biggest one of them all but sometimes, like on Fridays (I believe), they switch places between the main room and the Latin room for Latin Night. Saturday night, however, is the best night to go. Bathrooms are pretty nifty and clean, coming equipped with comfortable lighting as well as bathroom attendants.
The cover charge is $10 but Friday nights are free from 11:00pm to closing for those who are on the RSVP list (simply go to their site to RSVP). On Saturdays, it’s free admission until 12:00am for those who are on the list (i.e. their Facebook page), but beyond that, ladies are $10 and guys are $15. You can bring up to a minimum of 10 guests. Columbus 72 expects men to wear collared shirts and no boots or tims, however, I’ve seen some exceptions in the club, now that I can’t really comment on. Inside, the club is very well decorated with great lighting, sleek flat screens where music videos play, and plenty of couch space to relax and chill out.
Last but not least, we have the music. Here I will be discussing the music from the main room (i.e. Mainstream radio) as that is pretty much the biggest reason people go to clubs like these to begin with (that is, unless you ONLY like Latin music and hate ALL other types of music). Anyway, the music is usually pretty good but there are times when it can be a hit or miss. Sometimes, the good stuff will be played at the beginning and at the end while everything in between ranges from horrible auto-tune, crappy techno, and crappy reggae.
Don’t get me wrong, there is good techno (i.e. Janet Jackson’s “Together Again” and Edward Maya’s “Stereo Love”) and there is good reggae (i.e. Wayne Wonder’s “No Letting Go”), there is even SOME good auto-tune (i.e. Timbaland’s “The Way I Are”) but for the most part, 95% of these genres are generic, horrible, and downright repetitive – Is it no wonder that this generation is by far the worst? It’s even worse when a DJ plays underground reggae and techno. But anyway, I’m getting off topic here. For the most part, Columbus 72 is an excellent party spot on the upper west side of the Big Apple. Oh and did I mention that the girls are pretty hot?
