Lonely Pumpkin, lay in the empty pumpkin patch all by himself. The little pumpkin had been left behind and was very sad. All of his friends and went on to be either Halloween decorations or to become pumpkin favors for the Thanksgiving feast. Oh how he longed for the companionship of someone, anyone, whether or not it was another pumpkin did not matter.
Then out from the woods there was something coming towards him. Lonely wanted to hide but all he could do was to wait. There was nowhere to hide since all the big pumpkins were gone and he was still attached to his stem.
The thing was coming close and running really fast. Then it ran behind Lonely, before he could get a look as to what this thing was. The dog ran past, Lonely knew than that whatever it was, must be scared and must have been chased by the farmer’s dog, Oscar. The creature started to move from behind Lonely and looked both ways. Lonely became anxious and in a startling voice said, “Who are you? Where are you? Could you please move so I can see you?”
“Oh, oh, I’m so sorry,” cried the small animal voice from behind Lonely, “You just saved me from the farmer’s dog.” The animal then stepped in front of Lonely and he could now see that it was a small gray female squirrel, she was very pretty. “I’m so sorry if I scared you! My name is Nutsy, what’s your name? After all you just saved my life.” Nutsy said with much excitement as her heart was still calming down from the chase.
“I’m Lonely, at least, that’s what Monster used to call me,” Lonely explained with enthusiasm to be talking with someone, besides the possibility of making a new friend was exciting, as well.
“Who is Monster?” Nutsy asked.
“Monster was the biggest pumpkin in the patch, he was taken away to be a big Jack-O-Lantern in the towns pumpkin carving contest.” Lonely was very proud that Monster was now on display, but he was unaware that they had to kill him to make him into the Jack-O-Lantern.
“Oh, no,” cried Nutsy, “I’m so sorry you lost your friend Monster like that!”
“That’s ok,” Lonely was confused. “He couldn’t wait to see all the kids and how excited they would be to see him shine with that smile on his face.”
“No, I don’t think you understand,” cried Nutsy with a sad look on her face.
“What do you mean?” Lonely was very confused. Yet, he was intrigued to hear what Nutsy had to say.
“Well, Lonely, they had to kill Monster in order to carve him into a Jack-O-Lantern. They do this by cutting a hole in his head and scraping out his guts, they use the seeds by baking them and eating them.” Nutsy said with not too much emotion in her voice, as her stomach was growling.
“Oh,” Lonely looked very sad, “well then what happened to the other’s that went off to be part of the Thanksgiving feast?”
“Well, Thanksgiving is a time for the humans to celebrate the harvest. The harvest includes many delicious pumpkin dishes, like pumpkin soup, pie, and bread.” As Nutsy was describing the feast she started to get really hungry and realized that she was craving a pumpkin pie. But how could she tactfully kill her new friend for the piece of scrumptious pie?
Lonely, was surprised to see the evil twinkle in his new friends eyes and started to get a little worried. “So they had to kill my friends to make these scrumptious foods?” He hesitated as he asked.
“Yes, they do. They peel off your skin and cook what is left or sometimes they hollow you out and bake you.” Nutsy was really getting hungry talking about this.
“Well, maybe it would be better if I just stayed here to finish out my life alone,” Lonely expressed with a nervous twitch in his voice. He was really worried that his friend may not be so friendly.
Nutsy was happy to be home in her kitchen. She loved the smell of the fresh pumpkin baking in her oven. As she took the first bite of pumpkin soup, she thought about what she had done and a lonely tear ran down her face for the loss of her new friend.
