Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 was titled “The Beautiful Girls.” But as Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 reinforced, Mad Men girls, beautiful or not, have it rough. Although Season 4 has been dominated by Don’s rollercoaster internal crisis, he isn’t the only one to go through hard times these days. Peggy’s personal and professional worlds are even more vulnerable, while Joan’s unflappable demeanor is crumbling with her husband going to Vietnam, and young Sally Draper has become more unstable. But even though Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 took their turmoil to new heights, they at least lived to struggle another day.
Warning: Spoilers follow
After Don brought himself not to bed Dr. Faye Miller at the end of last week, he quickly reversed course within the first minute of this week. But Dr. Miller quickly learned the consequences of getting entangled in Don’s world — especially when Sally paid an unexpected visit to the office.
However, Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 had even more madcap antics than Sally running away. Peggy’s reunion with the radicals from “The Rejected” got her into a political debate, and a reassessment of her own views. Despite already being pushed to her limit in the last two weeks, Peggy is still not in for a break any time soon.
Roger had been on the sidelines lately, but Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 brought him and Joan back together again to make up for it. After catching Joan at a bad moment, with Greg called up to Vietnam, Roger made up for it as only he could. But a much more serious moment at the office brought both of them to grips with mortality.
The show is no stranger to black comedy, having made a joke out of running over someone’s foot. Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 had perhaps the most morbid comedic moment since then, as the time of a new fan favorite came to an end — at the most inopportune time for Don and the company.
With just four episodes left this year, it is about that time for things to start heating up toward the end. Don’s current rehabilitation efforts took a bit of a setback, while Peggy’s uncertainty keeps growing, and Roger and Joan are fully back in each other’s orbit.
Of course, what these developments from Mad Men Season 4 Episode 9 mean for the next four weeks cannot be guessed. No one can ever guess where the show is going anyway, since major shifts, and people dropping dead, can come without a moment’s notice.
