Do you know what a cabochon is? It’s a fancy name for a misshape marble! Well, the stones aren’t exactly marbles yet not exactly stones. They’re clear or colored glass pieces which are rounded on one side, and flat on the other. The cabochons are sold at craft stores, dollar-theme places and discount department stores. You’ll find them in the aisle where vases, rocks for vases and similar things are found. They’re not expensive; you can get a bag full of them for a buck or two, usually. These “marbles”, especially the clear ones, can be used to create unique refrigerator magnets that will astonish your guests!
Although you can use most any color of these marbles ones that feature dark colors can end up where the photo can barely be seen – if at all. Instead, choose ones that are clear, amber or other light colors. Make as many or as few as you want then use the leftover marbles in an aquarium or a vase.
For each marble you want to make cut a small photo or picture. You can take pictures of your kids, pets and even vacation photos, shrink them on your computer’s print program, then use them for this project. Or, cut tiny images from magazines, calendars, gift wrap or other sources. Make sets of magnetic photo marbles with baby themes, kids’ themes, family themes or others. In fact, the picture you attach to the marble doesn’t have to be a picture at all. It can be the phrase “I love you” cut from a magazine.
Cut a tiny picture for each marble. It can be a little tricky to do so since each one is shaped and sized slightly different. Cut it, set the marble on top of it, then look to see if you need to trim it at all. You should not be able to see the edges of the picture while looking at the outside of the marble.
Apply a little white glue to a button magnet and position the small photo on it. Allow it to dry for about fifteen minutes or so. Now use silicone sealer, found at hardware and craft stores, to set the marble. The sealer goes on in a small glob and dries clear. Squirt a tiny glob onto a small stick or piece of thick cardboard. The piece should be close in size to a paper match. Use this to spread the silicone on the photo.
Set the flat side of the marble on the picture, press it down to seal, then allow it to set. When dry you can put the unique pictures on the refrigerator or another metal surface. If you want, leave the magnet off and set the finished photo marbles on any flat surface. For these, glue a small piece of felt behind the picture. They’re beautiful and very unusual!
