Tissue paper, like that used with gift wrapping, can be folded to create decorative paper Halloween pumpkins for indoor display. The dimensions of the rectangular sheets of gift wrapping tissue paper will vary from 19 by 24 inches to 20 by 30 inches. In this craft project, 19 by 24-inch gift wrapping tissue paper was used to create a paper Halloween pumpkin 6 inches in diameter. To make Halloween pumpkin decorations from tissue paper, you will need orange and green gift wrapping tissue paper, scissors and string. Sewing thread can be used for the string. For variety in color, mix different shades of orange tissue paper to create the Halloween pumpkins.
Step 1-Folding the paper of the pumpkin
Evenly stack at least four orange sheets of tissue paper vertically on a table. Fold the stack of orange sheets in half repeatedly until the folded stack of sheets are about 6 inches by 19 inches.
Fold one sheet of green tissue paper about 2 inches narrower than the orange paper. Lay the folded green paper on the orange paper with about 1 inch overhanging on one end to create a stem for the Halloween pumpkin. Start folding the layers of tissue paper accordion-style starting at the end that does not have the green extension. Each fold should be about 1 inch.
Step 2-Snip off folds
Holding the accordion-folded tissue paper firmly, snip off the folds of the orange paper, taking as little paper as possible. Snipping off the folds displays the layers of tissue paper.
Step 3-Make cuts
Make a cut 1/3 in on both sides of the green paper, and then twist the green paper slightly to create the stem. Make a cut about half way up on bottom center of the folded orange paper, which will become the base of the Halloween pumpkin.
Step 4-Tie and spread tissue layers
A piece of string about 6 inches long will be wrapped around the center of the orange paper to hold it together. If using sewing thread, use two or three strands together for more strength. Run the string through the slit in the center of the orange paper, up through the first slit of the green paper, wrap around the orange paper to go through the bottom slit, return up again to go through the second slit in the green paper. Knot the string and cut off the excess. Spread apart all the layers of tissue paper to create the Halloween pumpkin tissue paper decoration.
The finished tissue paper pumpkin will be about 6 inches tall. Create pumpkins of varying sizes to use as Halloween decorations, or create smaller versions to use for as part of a table setting with one Halloween pumpkin decoration on each plate. The height of the pumpkin is controlled by the width of the paper; the fullness by the number of sheets of paper.
