No one could have imagine that father wouldn’t be home in time for the holidays. But, he spoke kindly that he will try to find away to be there on Christmas Eve just to be with us like he has done since my birth. He never failed staying truth to his word.
So, when the days of Christmas fast approaching I notice mother always stayed calm during this particular time. She was the joy that kept others in the house calm. She went by her business, of putting up Christmas decorations and ribbons and sending out Christmas cards to unknown soldiers and neighbors.
When she wasn’t volunteering at church, or the local hospital. You most likely would fond her , at the mall dress as a female Santa. Sure, she didn’t look the part but she had a quick answer to those that question’s her dressed in the red suit.
She would offer in solving the opinions, of parents and children that she was only assisting Kris Kringle. Who called her “Mama Santa” although we just called her mama? She would listen calmly and quietly to the joy, of the kids, as they describe with cheer the things they wants to appear under the children tree.
And, she would softly alert them that Santa, might have to place limits on presents, so they can get more next year. This happen because she realize that parents might not be able to meet their children demands. It was humorous to see our mom bringing pure delight to people.
But, we knew she missed father being around to be the partner, of surprise. She would end her day after the mall employment and come home cheerful and exhausted. But never depressed or down. On Christmas Eve, we the children, of Mama Santa wished mom would ease up doing her routine, of pleasing children, at the mall.
Not that, we was selfish just that we needed her home on Christmas Eve. We know that our greatest gift isn’t the presents that Santa will bring but sharing the holiday season will someone dear. And to us that was our mother that gave so unselfishly to other.
So imagine our surprise when she came though the front door tired and weary. And alerted us to go straight to bed or Santa just might skip our house and go next door. Like, the rush of wind left behind we was gone to our room and not a moment too soon.
It must have been a hope or a wish that we get to see Santa come down the chimney. But, as the minutes ticked slowly it wasn’t meant to be granted as we have falling in to a peaceful sleep. And, it was disturbed for a moment when we looked out the window and saw Santa Claus drop off mother and dad with presents.
I rush to mom room because I knew she was here went we went to bed. But, after opening her bedroom door I didn’t see her in bed. So, I guess that was her with Santa, who had deliver her home with Dad.
He winked his eyes and gave a salute to them and said “Happy Holiday, Mama Santa…Hope to see you next year.” For, a moment I had all the gifts, of joy I need. I have my parents love and gifts can’t replace that one main thing.
