I’ve been going to Mamma Lucia’s for years, for two reasons. The food is excellent, and the service is hard to beat. Its as simple as that, and while there’s nothing fancy about this restaurant, it is located in a fairly upscale part of Fairfax City, VA. Just down from the County Courthouse, and all around historical civil war sites, this is a “must stop by” place for lunch or dinner. You will not find the quality and generous portions of their entrees, anywhere in Northern Virginia. Their prices won’t make your wallet cry, and I have yet to have had a negative experience at this restaurant, which is amazing considering I’ve probably eaten here over one hundred times. That’s right, I’ve been dining at Mamma Lucia’s since high school, and many of the people who worked there then, are still right behind the counter some fourteen years later.
Consistency is what it is all about, and due to keeping staff, this restaurant is able to have even improved on its previous high standards. My personal favorite is their pizza. You would have to drive to New York City to get this good of a pie, and you can purchase it in either single slices or a small, medium, or large one. This is New York style, and the pieces are gigantic. You will be impressed by the quality of the mozzarella cheese, and if you are a pepperoni fan, there’s a bit of spice to it. Its not going to require heartburn medicine, but it reminds you that this pizza isn’t your “cheap carryout type.” A slice costs $2.50, and is well worth it, or you can get a large for around $12. If you eat it at the restaurant, it is served on one of those bright silver metallic dishes, that makes it all that much more appetizing.
Do you like Steak and Cheese subs? If you’ve been to Philly, you know what its supposed to look like. Thick bread, large heaping stacks of steak, with melted cheese, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, along with a healthy dash of mayo. That’s what you’ll find with the Steak and Cheese Sub from here. You won’t be disappointed, as the quality of the steak won’t be confused with the shredded stuff you get from the frozen food section. The cheese is just beautifully melted, and if you get a side of fries with this, you won’t need dinner. Unlike a lot of other Italian restaurants, their fries are of the steak variety, and quite good.
You can also get famous Italian entrees here. They are priced from $9-$18, and my personal favorite is the Chicken Parmigiana. While it won’t be confused with what you’ll get at Maggiano’s, its of generous size. You get a couple breasts of breaded chicken, topped with marinara sauce and noodles. Its going to fill you up, and I like how the chicken breasts are both juicy and served piping hot. Its a real delicacy, and one of their more exotic entrees is the Lobster Ravioli. I haven’t had that yet, but its popular with the suit wearing crowd, and on my next visit I might just have to give it a shot.
I love the food, and the folks who work here are wonderful. They are just so kind, very helpful, and always quick to get your meals to you. I have been entertained by their humor as well, and I just love the comfortable setting of the dining area. While it won’t be confused with nearby Italian restaurants that will make you take out a second mortgage, the chairs and tables are more than decent enough. The table cloths, and all of the paintings, give the restaurant a classy touch. It can get busy, so be prepared for the noise, but that’s what is to be expected at a good Italian restaurant. The physical address of Mamma’s Lucia’s is 3950 University Drive Fairfax, VA 22030, and they can be reached at 703-273-6777, if you do want a carryout order. My recommendation is to “dine in,” because this is a fantastic establishment that keeps patrons coming back for more.
