A man from Madison Heights faces several charges in connection after driving off with a family friend’s van. Police say that 24-year-old Paul Spurlock took off with his 51-year-old companion’s van in the early hours of October 4. The pair were visiting the woman’s daughter at Emory bar, which is located at 22700 Woodward Avenue in Ferndale. They stopped there after Spurlock completed a few odd jobs around the victim’s house.
According to police, Spurlock told the woman that he was leaving just before 1am. Shortly after he left, the woman realized that the keys to her van were missing. Since the suspect had recently been released from jail, she became suspicious and called the police. Officers arrived around 1:20am. One officer, who was out in the parking lot, saw the suspect pull up in the van.
After approaching the suspect, police discovered that he was wanted on a few misdemeanor warrants. Officers also found small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin on the man. Spurlock was arraigned on October 4 in Ferndale 43rd District Court on charges of drug possession, driving on a suspended license and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He is being held on a $5,000 bond and is due in court for a pre-exam conference on October 14.
