On this episode of “Man Woman Wild,” Ruth and Myke are lost on the banks of the Colorado River in Utah’s Moab Dessert. They have to cross the fast moving river to get to land. They decide to camp close to the river so that they can spot a boat to be rescued. They make a fire and a shelter for their first night.
The next morning after Myke sets out to hunt he realizes that they are on an island and there is not enough high calorie game to eat. They end up eating the inner white part of cattails and their roots raw. Myke and Ruth have to cross the river again to try to get to the main land for a greener area where there will be more plants to eat and game. Ruth vomits when they get on land due to the fact that the water is only 50 degrees. Her getting sick is one of the first signs of hypothermia.
Thank goodness they kept their dry clothes in their knapsack while crossing. Once they get on land Ruth makes a fire while Myke scouts the area only to find that they are on another small island and there is nothing to eat except cat tails. When Myke comes back he tells Ruth the bad news that they must cross the river again.
Crossing the River again
This time when they crossed the river they each used a long branch to stick into the bottom of the river as they walk across. While walking across the river they hold onto their sticks to keep most of their body out of the water. Keeping their body out of the water this way keeps their core body temperature from dropping so rapidly.
Finally they are on the main land and they change into dry clothes. Ruth makes a fire with the fire starter kit in the knapsack while Myke goes hunting again. Ruth spots a frog but can’t catch it. Myke comes back with his arms full of cat tails and Ruth decides to make a soup out of them while Myke looks for meat. Myke kills a big bull frog that is sitting on top of the water with a large stick. Ruth adds the frogs legs along with a couple of grubs to their soup. Ruth refuses to eat the grubs that she calls maggots and when Myke takes a small taste, he ends up not eating them either. Finally they are able to spend the night on the main land.
Need to get to the top of the mountain
Due to the fact that they have not seen any boats at all on the river, the next morning they realize that they must get to the top of the mountain to see if there is any type of civilization. When they reach the top there are very disappointed to see that there are no signs of civilization at all. However, there are more eatable plants on top of the mountain. They find wild asparagus and Yucca plants which are very eatable. Ruth says the Yucca plants taste great. The Indians not only used Yucca plants for eating but also for cordage and to make soap.
They take a short nap because it is so hot. Their nap is interrupted with the sounds of turkeys gobbling. Myke makes two crossbows out of green, strong and flexible branches by tying two of them together for each crossbow to give them added strength. The branches must be at least as long as he is tall in order to work right. He also makes arrows and has Ruth practice shooting her crossbow.
Next they go turkey hunting
At this point I am feeling pretty sorry for them because not only are they really tired from lack of sleep but they haven’t had much food to sustain them. I was really excited for them when I heard the wild turkeys.
They try to ambush the turkeys by walking partly in the woods ahead of them so that they won’t scare them away. However, they end up going on a turkey chase because the turkeys are too smart and get spooked. They chased the turkeys for miles but came up empty handed. On their way back to camp, Myke spots a rabbit, but, misses. He used up too many calories chasing the turkeys and just couldn’t get a good aim at the rabbit.
Don’t let your temper take over
Myke stresses the fact that in a survival situation one should not let their temper get the better of them. He says just get over it and move on and try to learn from your experience. That is good advice in any situation. We tend to waste too much time and energy on anger when things don’t go well.
When things go wrong, I always tell myself that God must be trying to teach me something through this experience. That is when I take time out to pray and reconnect with God. Funny but God knows us better than we know ourselves. Many times we are so busy throughout the day trying to reach our goals that we just don’t see what is right there in front of us. This is when things start to go wrong or we make mistakes.
The next morning they hear the boat and use their jackets to flag it down. Myke says that he is very proud of his Sergeant Major Wifey. She is doing very well on these episodes with him.
