Dried mango is the novelty ingredient
The mango is a very versatile fruit. It is said to be one of the most extensively exploited fruits for food, juice, flavor, fragrance and color in the entire world. Also, its fruit and leaves are ritually used in various cultures as floral decorations at weddings, public celebrations and religious ceremonies.
There are good points and bad points attributed to the mango.
Good: Mangos are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. They are also a good source of dietary fiber and vitamin B6, and a very good source of vitamin A and vitamin C.
Not so good: A large portion of the calories in mangos come from sugars. Also, it has a fairly large seed which makes preparation of the flesh for salads, salsas, etc. a bit time consuming.
Bad: Mango peel contains urushiol, the chemical in poison ivy and poison sumac that can cause contact dermatitis in susceptible people. Those with a history of poison ivy or poison oak may be most at risk for such an allergic reaction.

Some plus factors for this cereal: It is crunchy and therefore quite satisfying in this regard. It is made with organic ingredients and without preservatives, and organic whole rolled oats comprise the largest ingredient in this cereal. Served with milk it provides variety as a cold cereal, and it can be mixed with yogurt or eaten as it comes from the package as an on-the-go snack.
A negative factor: It tastes fairly sweet due to the addition of the dried mango and the fact that they use organic milled cane sugar as the second ingredient, and two other syrup ingredients. The 10 grams of sugar quoted in the nutrition facts section suggests that this probably isn’t the type of cereal that one would choose to eat on a regular basis.
But different it is, and an interesting change of pace from the regular line-up of boxed cereals. If you have the opportunity and this cereal appeals to you, try Organic Mango Passion Granola Cereal which is available only at a neighborhood Trader Joe’s store, and judge for yourself if you like the taste. After all, variety is the spice of life!
