With the rising cost of health care these days, many people struggle to pay for the medical care that they need. Numerous health insurance programs for people with low incomes are available in Massachusetts for individuals and families in need.
To apply for assistance, call the MassHealth Enrollment Center at 888-665-9993 or download an application online from the Massachusetts Office of Health and Human Services website at http://www.mass.gov/Eeohhs2/docs/masshealth/appforms/mbr.pdf. You can use the same form to apply for all types of medical assistance programs in Massachusetts. If you’re not sure if you qualify, it’s best to go ahead and complete an application. A trained employee will evaluate your situation. If you need help completing the application, they will also provide assistance.
MassHealth Standard provides comprehensive health insurance for many people in Massachusetts with low incomes, including elderly people, disabled people, pregnant women, children up to the age of 19 and parents of eligible children. It is the state’s version of Medicaid, a program that is jointly funded by federal and state funds and available in all 50 states. It covers a wide variety of healthcare services including hospital care, visits to doctors or clinics, outpatient laboratory tests, home health care, mental health care and some dental care.
CommonHealth provides insurance similar to MassHealth Standard for disabled children and disabled adults that earn too much money to qualify for MassHealth Standard but not enough money to pay for the health care they need. Many people with disabilities require even more medical care than the average person so this program provides much needed assistance to many in Massachusetts.
MassHealth Family Assistance
MassHealth Family Assistance provides most of the health insurance benefits offered by MassHealth Standard to children and people with HIV that don’t qualify for MassHealth Standard or CommonHealth. Recipients must meet certain income guidelines. MassHealth Family Assistance also helps pay health insurance premiums for some adults that work. While benefits are not quite as comprehensive as MassHealth Standard, they still provide a great deal of assistance to people in need. The cost of treating HIV in particular can be quite high due to the high cost of prescription antiretroviral drugs.
