Matt Leinart has joined the ranks of busts as a NFL quarterback. It looks like journeyman quarterback Derek Anderson will beat out Leinart to replace the retired Kurt Warner. I am a little surprised since I consider Matt Leinart to be the best college quarterback of all time. However being a great college quarterback does not always translate to being good in the NFL.
Matt Leinart isn’t quite on my biggest quarterback busts of all time list, but he sure was a disappointment. I suspected Leinart was a bust when Kurt Warner resurrected his career and beat Matt out for the Arizona Cardinals quarterback job. Now that Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin are gone expect Arizona to go back to the bottom of the league in talent. Larry Fitzgerald can’t do it all himself and Arizona made no major free agent moves to improve their club in the off season
The Cardinals ownership was content for years to be doormats in the NFL and will revert to that tradition. If you notice teams that want new stadiums suddenly become better until they get them. That is why the Minnesota Vikings are trying so hard to win right now with Brett Favre and the gang.
Matt Leinart didn’t have a great work ethic coming into the NFL and his mechanics look a little off. Part of that is that he is left handed and southpaws have had little success in the NFL. Steve Young and Kenny “The Snake” Stabler were excellent left handed quarterbacks. Michael Vick and Jim Zorn were good left handed quarterbacks and after that the list is bare. Matt Leinart being left handed may well have contributed to him being a NFL bust.
I don’t think the Cardinals will give Matt Leinart another chance if he does not beat out Derek Anderson. Leinart may well be released after the preseason or less likely, traded to a team in need of a QB. It is a shame because I feel Leinart did mature recently and I had hoped he would have a good season with the Cardinals but I do feel he is a bust now.
