I have said it a million times and yet it still bears repeating. I love McCormick products, especially their gravies and spices. I think they are the best available today.
I use a lot of McCormick gravy mixes. My all time favorite is their Homestyle Gravy. It has a near perfect taste with just the right amount of richness and flavor. It is also perfectly creamy and absolutely delicious.
McCormick promises a taste you can trust and they stand behind that promise 100%, using only quality spices and first-class ingredients. That is never more evident then in McCormick’s Homestyle Gravy.
Like almost all of McCormick’s gravies, this one comes in a pre-packaged mix. One packet weight .87-oz or 24 grams. There are 4, .25 cup servings in each packet.
Each serving represents 25 calories. However, it is important to note that a mere 5 calories of that amount is fat-related.
McCormick’s Homestyle Gravy contains only 1 gram of fat. It also contains 4 grams of carbohydrate and 320 milligrams of salt. Unfortunately, this gravy contains no real nutritional value.
Ingredients include beef fat, caramel color, cornstarch, corn syrup solids, enriched wheat flour, garlic, milk, miscellaneous spices, modified corn starch, natural flavor enhancers, onion, salt, sugar, soy lecithin, soy protein, sunflower oil, wheat gluten and yeast extract. It also contains disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, maltodextrin, hydrolyzed corn gluten and sodium caseinate. While the wheat flour is enriched with folic acid, mononitrate, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin, the amounts are insufficient enough to constitute any significant nutritional value.
Making McCormick’s Homestyle Gravy is simple. It can be done on top of the stove or in the microwave.
To fix on top of the stove, stir together the gravy mix and 1 cup of cold water in a small saucepan. Whisk thoroughly to remove all of the lumps.
Place the pan over medium heat and cook until the gravy begins to boil. Then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 minute.
The gravy will slowly begin to thicken. Once it reaches the desired thickness, it is ready to serve!
To fix the gravy in the microwave, place 1 cup of cold water into a medium sized microwave safe bowl. Whisk in the gravy mix. Continue mixing until all of the lumps are removed.
Microwave the gravy on high for approximately 2.5 minutes or until it begins to thicken. Then remove it from the microwave and serve as desired.
If you want to make creamier gravy, substitute milk for half or all of the water. Add a couple of tablespoons of white wine or cooking sherry to the original gravy recipe to kick up the flavor over beef or pork. Also try adding green onions and garlic to make steaks zing with flavor.
Here is my summary review:
Preparation ease: 5 stars. McCormick’s Homestyle Gravy mix is easy to make. Just follow the instructions to perfect gravy each time.
Taste: 5 stars. I think this is McCormick’s best gravy mix. I buy it in huge quantities.
Packaging: 5 stars. The flaming red package with the well known McCormick label is hard to ignore on the store shelf. The package has a chocolate colored band across the top, with white lettering, announcing the type of gravy mix inside. McCormick’s red, white and blue label is easily recognizable and draws the consumer in with ease. A picture of the gravy served over pork is included on the cover to whet the customer’s appetite.
Freshness: 5 stars. Ingredients within McCormick’s Homestyle Gravy are flash dehydrated to ensure freshness. These mixes will last for quite awhile. However, each package is also marked with a “best by” date to ensure the customer will be satisfied each and every time.
Dietary value: 2 stars. The gravy has trace amounts of folic acid, iron, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine. Unfortunately, those amounts are too small to be calculated. Luckily, this gravy is low in fat and carbohydrate.
Ease of purchase: 5 stars. McCormick products are sold in virtually every grocery mart as well as in discount department stores that have a large food section.
Price: 5 stars. The price for McCormick products are affordable at between $1 and $1.50 a package. The price may; however, will vary greatly from store to store. However, McCormick usually provides coupons to help offset the inflated prices of some stores.
Product purchase probability: 5 stars. I buy this gravy every time I go to the store.
Retailer purchase probability: 5 stars. I get mine primarily at the commissary because it saves me money.
Final rating: 4.7 stars. It’s my favorite for a reason. It’s just that good!
