Megamind box office is expected to lead the way this weekend. However, the Megamind box office competition offered various challenges along the way. Although animated 3D movies usually open at No. 1, this one opened against a star-studded R-rated comedy, and the latest Tyler Perry epic. Therefore, this was bound to be one of the more profitable weekends for new movies in a while. But it was the box office totals for Megamind that led the way yesterday, despite reports of underperforming.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the latest animated Dreamworks 3D movie is at No. 1, albeit by a slimmer margin than expected. The first estimates have it only making $12.5 million on Friday – but AMC theaters have system problems that might have hampered their count.
Therefore, the new Megamind box office projections have it making $45 million for the weekend. Although that would keep it at No. 1, the movie was expected to get around $50 million. If it performs below expectations, it would cause some concern for Dreamworks.
The studio has already seen an animated film soar after a slow start this year, as How To Train Your Dragon became huge after its initial opening. Yet it didn’t have overwhelming competition, whereas this movie, and all others, will be overshadowed by Harry Potter in two weeks.
Therefore, the box office has to clean up now, before the biggest movie of the fall opens. However, the competition this weekend also ate into the film, although they appealed to two different demographics.
Due Date did not open as big as The Hangover, but the newfound power of Zach Galifianakis and director Todd Phillips – and Robert Downey Jr’s own star power – yielded a $12 million opening yesterday. Deadline projects it will get up to $34 million for the weekend, which is right on target with expectations.
However, projections are varied for Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls. Thanks to the Megamind box office, and that of Due Date, this was one Perry movie that wasn’t expected to open at No. 1 – especially since it’s unlike his earlier work. Yet it was still expected to do some damage, although Deadline has different reports on how much it did.
Earlier yesterday, estimates had For Colored Girls exceeding expectations, with a projected $28 million opening. But hours later, Deadline had it down to $22 million, with $8 million made on Friday. The final estimates may be somewhere in between.
With the combined box office of Megamind, Due Date and For Colored Girls, this may be the biggest first weekend of November ever. This time of year is when the fall rush begins in earnest, and having three potential hits in one weekend is a big kick off – even if some of them aren’t as big as expected.
