As settlement for Mel and Robyn Gibson’s divorce nears completion, several issues are still in question. Will Icon Trust, Mel and Robyn’s children’s trust fund cover Oksana Grigorieva’s baby Lucia. Do ‘good will assets’ mean Robyn gets less support? Lawyers for Mel and Robyn Gibson are nearly finished with the property settlement from the dissolution of the Gibson’s 30 year marriage. The Gibson divorce has thus far been peaceful, despite Mel Gibson’s epic rants and public outbursts.
However two issues may unsettle this seemingly calm divorce. First, Mel Gibson has made a name for himself, both as actor and movie producer. The name ‘Mel Gibson’ had positive connotations up til 2006, that is. That good reputation is apparently an asset and hence a bargaining chip in a marriage. A positive reputation is referred to as ‘good will’ or ‘good will assets’ in divorce law terminology. That Mel Gibson has abused the good will of his reputation over the last four years is obvious. Obscene phone rants to Oksana Grigorieva, threats, violent language used with reporters, racial, gender-based and religious slurs, have all eroded Mel Gibson’s reputation. They have in fact cost him jobs.
The issue in the divorce settlement is whether Mel Gibson’s wife should be made to suffer even more than she presumably has suffered because of Mel’s foolish behavior? Should Mel Gibson’s loss of character reputation and subsequent loss of work and income affect the property settlement. Robyn Gibson’s lawyer Lauren Wasso is exploring that issue.
Perhaps even more important is the Icon Trust, a financial agreement and trust fund set up by Mel and Robyn Gibson to care for their seven children. Notice the keyword ‘their’ however. It’s operative. According to the language of Icon Trust, monies will be divided between children born to Robyn or Mel Gibson, not just children born to both parents. Mel Gibson’s baby daughter Lucia, born to Oksana Grigorieva becomes and automatic beneficiary of Icon Trust. However the Gibson-Grigorieva relationship went sour fast. During the mediation agreement between Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva, Oksana waives baby Lucia’s rights to the Icon Trust funds under the agreement baby Lucia receive $4.3 million on Mel Gibson’s death and a $2 million life insurance policy, which Oksana is working to disavow.
Mel Gibson’s failed relationship issues and settlements are tripping over each other, it seems. The moral of the story, in mixed metaphors, is ‘the seed you sow may come back to bite you’. Don’t enter into another sticky relationship until you have successfully negotiated dissolution of the first.
