The long anticipated film, Harry Potter 7 Part 1, has been released in theaters. It meets expectations with the action, drama and suspense that viewers have come to expect from the Harry Potter franchise. Harry Potter’s search for Horcruxes and the hints at his search (or accidental finding) of the Deathly Hallows leaves behind many scenes that moviegoers will be commenting on for some time. Some of these memorable scenes you may remember from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book. Others were added specifically for the movie.
*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Harry Potter 7 Part 1.
The opening montage of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One shows Ron, Hermione and Harry getting ready to say goodbye to their childhood homes and head off on a very adult mission. Harry and Ron are shown standing at their respective homes, seemingly pondering the year to come. What makes this scene memorable is Hermione’s goodbye to her parents. Instead of sending her parents into hiding, Hermione erases their memories, causing them to forget they ever had a daughter. As she points her wand at her parents and whispers “obliviate,” her likeness disappears from every photo in the Granger living room. This moment was only mentioned in the book, not described, so this was a nice touch for the film.
Harry Potter 7 Part 1 is the most serious and gloomy of all the Harry Potter movies to date. Nonetheless, there were one or two scenes where a bit of humor broke the tension. One of these scenes was near the beginning of the movie. Harry’s friends have arrived at Privet Drive to see him to the Burrow safely. In order to do this, several of them have taken polyjuice potion so they look like Harry. In this scene, Fred, George, Hermione, Mundungus Fletcher, Ron and Fleur Delacour slowly turn into Harry and begin to dress like him. They all retain the voices of their characters, so there are seven Harrys, all with different voices, both male and female. Fleur’s reaction to looking like Harry is priceless. We have Daniel Radcliffe to thank for this memorable scene. (He donned a lovely bra for Fleur.)
At one point in the movie, a horcrux attacks Ron to keep him from destroying it. The evil item contains a part of Voldemort’s soul, which looks into Ron’s and see his deepest fears. Ron is attacked by spiders and evil versions of Hermione and Harry. They tell him how much his mother wishes Harry was her son and how Hermione loves Harry and not Ron. None of this is true, but the scene shows just how much Ron has suffered in the dim shadows surrounding Harry’s spotlight.
The last memorable scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One is the death of Dobby the long-suffering house elf. Dobby has been a friend to Harry Potter since the second film and book. He was an abused slave of the Malfoy family until Harry rescued him from his servitude. Despite Dobby’s annoying habits, Harry grew to love him and vice versa. Dobby is murdered by Bellatrix LeStrange in Harry Potter 7 Part 1. Harry is disapparating with the creature when she stabs Dobby. They reach their destination, where Dobby dies in Harry’s arms. Before he dies; however, Dobby tells Harry that he is happy to be with his friend at that moment.
Very soon after Dobby’s death, the film ends. The film is cut off very abruptly and viewers are left clamoring for the last installment of the Harry Potter series. It is truly going to mark the end of an era.
