Film maker Michael Moore, one of my folk heroes, tired of the bigotry and racism against the Cordoba Initiative, the group who are building an Islamic Community Center in New York City, is asking for help. In an article entitled “If the Mosque Isn’t Built, This Is No Longer America”, Michael Moore is asking everyone who reads his blog, or simply agrees with him, to donate money to help build the Cordoba Initiative’s Islamic Community Center in New York City. Michael Moore will match the first $10,000 donated.
How many Americans, who believe this right-wing attack on these American Muslims is nothing more than bigotry are going to stand up and say “Enough”? Will you donate? I just did.
In his article, Michael Moore begins:
” I am opposed to the building of the “mosque” two blocks from Ground Zero. I want it built on Ground Zero.
Why? Because I believe in an America that protects those who are the victims of hate and prejudice. I believe in an America that says you have the right to worship whatever God you have, wherever you want to worship.
And I believe in an America that says to the world that we are a loving and generous people and if a bunch of murderers steal your religion from you and use it as their excuse to kill 3,000 souls, then I want to help you get your religion back. And I want to put it at the spot where it was stolen from you.”
How any right-thinking American can disagree with that is beyond me and, if the majority do, then America really is the country of hatred and bigotry I now think of it as.
Even more distressing about this New York City ‘mosque’ fight, and the need for Michael Moore to ask for donations for the mosque, is how terrible America’s reputation overseas is now. Watching the TV from overseas and reading international news media about 9/11 today, not one single media outlet concentrated on the 9/11 ceremony in New York City. Instead, every single one was leading with the story of Islamophobia in America and how it’s now a ‘country of hate’.
How sad that America has come to this. A country who’s reputation is so entirely and utterly destroyed, it will be incredible if it ever recuperates. And, as much of the rest of the world is moving on with their lives, building their economies, creating new businesses and new ties with other countries, America is wallowing in bigotry and hatred against a group that, not only are Americans, but had no more to do with 9/11 than my dead grandmother. When a country begins to turn on its own, it truly is lost.
But what’s even more tragic about this is while Americans are trapped in their world of in-fighting and hate, they haven’t woken up yet to the reality that Al Queda have won. With all of the extremist Muslim attacks on America both in country and overseas, the goal of Al Queda is to destroy its reputation, its economy and its culture. Bingo. Job’s done.
Because when hate-filled, right-wing bigots can cause otherwise rational-thinking Americans to talk about this ‘mosque’ being built on ‘hallowed ground’ – a place more than two blocks from Ground Zero and next to strip malls and porn stores – they’ve out-manipulated all over you. How fucking sad is that?
Meanwhile, if you want to donate to the Cordoba Initiative for their New York City Islamic Community Center, head to Michael Moore’s new blog ‘Open Mike’ and send a donation through PayPal. All donations are tax-deductible and Michael Moore will match the first $10,000 donated.
Are you going to do what’s absolutely right, or are you going to join the rest of the bigots saying “the mosque shouldn’t be built here”. Because if you are, America, you’re even more lost than I think you are.
Updated September 14th – as of early this morning, Michael Moore is reporting his fund raising for the New York City Islamic Community Center has raised over $60,000, with more donations still expected to come in. Way to go, Michael.
