I love dark chocolate. Trust me, I know that chocolate isn’t good for me. On the other hand I also know that I’m not going to give it up forever. It’s my fatal flaw.
When it comes to dark chocolate, my favorite comes from Mars Snackfood U.S., LLC. It is the Milky Way Midnight.
There is something about that amazing vanilla nougat mixed with creamy golden caramel covered in semi-sweet dark chocolate that speaks to my soul. I’m hooked. I admit it.
It is actually a good thing that Milky Way Midnight is a bit difficult to find. I can’t indulge in something I can’t get my hands on. However, around Halloween, this delectable candy turns up in mini bar bags. That’s my downfall because I am sure to buy one or two.
I hoped that I would have a ton of trick or treaters this year that would empty my bags completely. That didn’t happen. I was left with one entire bag of my own. Oh the torture of it all! Rationing will be my only savior.
Milky Way Midnight Minis come in a 10.50-oz bag that is 297.7 grams. There are 7 servings per bag with a serving representing 5 mini bars.
There are 190 calories in a serving and about one-third of those, or 70, come from fat. There are 7 grams of fat in each serving. Five grams of that comes from saturated fat. Luckily Milky Way Midnight Minis contain no trans fat.
They do; however, contain 29 grams of carbohydrates, 24 grams of sugar, 60 milligrams of salt and 5 milligrams of cholesterol. To the good, they also contain 1 gram of protein and 1 gram of fiber. Additionally, they provide 6% of the daily-recommended amount of iron.
Ingredients include cocoa butter, corny syrup, milk fat, semisweet chocolate, skim milk, soy lecithin and sugar. They also contain artificial and natural flavors and hydrogenated palm kernel oil.
I love the Milky Way Midnight Minis because they are produced only as needed for certain holidays and are generally fresh. Nothing is better than fresh nougat, caramel and chocolate. Here is my summary review:
Smart Choice? Yes and No. I don’t know that anyone can make a case for candy ever being considered a smart choice. However, due to the fact that Milky Way Midnight Minis are made with dark chocolate, used in moderation, they are a better choice than a lot of the other candies available in today’s marketplace.
Tasty? Yes, or at least I think so. I love them. They are my favorite when it comes to a candy bar.
Variety? Yes. While Milky Way Midnight only comes in one form, it does come in various sizes. These include the minis, the fun size and in full size bars. Then, of course, there is always the traditional Milky Way to choose from as well as Milky Way Caramel.
Attractive Packaging? Yes. Milky Way Midnight Minis come in a star studded black package with blue, brown, gold and yellow trim and white letters. The Milky Way logo is emblazoned across the package with “midnight” being spelled out in yellow. The packaging is distinctive enough to make this candy easy to spot on the store shelves.
Easy to Store? Yes. The bag measures nearly 11″ in length by 6.5″ in width. It will store in a kitchen pantry, cupboard or cabinet well. The individual mini bars are about 1″ by 1″ in size and can be put in a candy bowl, jar, or canister with ease.
Are They Fresh? Yes. Because Milky Way Midnight Minis are only available during holidays when candy is a mainstay, the bags are almost always fresh. Mars ensures that by printing a use by date on the back of each bag.
Note: Some people like to eat Milky Way Midnight bars frozen. Just be aware that it isn’t advisable to refreeze the bar once it has been thawed. It will affect the freshness of the product.
Diet Safe? No. Anyone who needs to keep an eye on his or her fat, carb or sugar intake should probably partake of this candy very rarely. On the other hand, if one is going to cheat with a sweet treat, this is a decent one to choose.
Easily Available? Not always. Milky Way Midnight bars are not sold by every store that carries candy. In fact, a lot of places choose to provide nothing but the original Milky Way. This year, I was only able to locate the Milky Way Midnight Minis at Target.
Price Effective? Yes. At between $2.49 and $3.29 a package, the Milky Way Midnight Mini bars manage to go a long way.
Product Purchase Recommendation? Uncertain. The high fat, carb and sugar intake means this candy could be dangerous in the wrong hands. However, if used in small doses, on rare occasions, I think it is a good option.
