They say when you come to Las Vegas, Nevada you have to be lucky in order to win, so on the evening of Monday, August 24, 2010 eighty four beauties from all over the globe competed for the most prestigious title in the whole world, but at the end only one woman can wear the crown.
So who was the lucky lady who won it all? After a live two hour telecast from NBC and Telemundo, Miss Mexico 22-year-old Jimenna Navarette won the Miss Universe pageant at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas strip. This is the second time Mexico has won the international pageant which is co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. The first win was in 1991 when Miss Mexico Lupita Jones took home the title, which coincidentally also took place in Las Vegas.
The top 5 results were 4th runner up Miss Philippines Venus Raj, 3rd runner up was Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska, 2nd runner up was Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell, and 1st runner up was Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps.
Special awards also went to Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul for Miss Photogenic and Best National Costume while Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell was voted amongst the other ladies as Miss Congeniality.
During the reign of Miss Universe, Navarette will live in a New York apartment with Miss USA Rima Fakih and Miss Teen USA Kamie Crawford, with all expenses paid with jewelry, clothing, shoes, and a one year scholarship to the New York Film Academy. She will also receive an undisclosed salary.
But the advantages of being the most beautiful woman in the world is the glamourous life filled with international travel, modeling for various magazines, and television appearances.
But most importantly, Miss Universe acts as spokesperson for HIV/AIDS prevention, particularly among adolescents. During her reign, Jimenna Navarette will work with the Latino Commission on AIDS, Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and YouthAIDS/PSI among other organizations.
