I love chocolate! I have been a big fan of M&M’s for many years. I first became aware of this candy when, during my childhood, they ran a big ad campaign telling parents and children the “chocolate melts in your mouth; not in your hands”. This ad would show two children one with chocolate smeared on their hands after eating a candy bar and one child with completely clean hands after eating M&M’s. This ad so caught my attention I tried holding M&M’s in my hand to see if they would ever melt and after about a half-an-hour the candy melted. I was very impressed with my discovery of the ad’s inaccurate information; my parents were not so impressed, based mostly on my less than scrupulous hand washing skills, probably why they got me the candy if the first place.
When M&M’s first came out with their dark chocolate I didn’t pick them immediately, and I was very disappointed when I found they were no longer available. The next time they were in stores I made a beeline to my nearest store to make sure I got to try them. I loved them. It is a great balance of sugar and the rich flavor of dark chocolate. I have tried almost every new variety marketed in the past few years and have been delighted with their new range.
Unfortunately, I can’t give thumbs up to the newest M&M: the one with a pretzel inside. I tried a small “test” bag yesterday. It has the same problem I have found with M&M’s and nuts; somehow, the combination of chocolate and non-chocolate ingredients seems to detract from the flavor of their chocolate. At first I thought it was me because I don’t like nuts very much, but I also love pretzels, plain and covered with various toppings, and I found M&M’s newest candy even more disappointing than their chocolate and nuts.
