31 North 62 East is a psychological thriller that pits politics against the common good of soldiers in combat when the British Prime Minister gives away the position of a British unit to ensure an arms deal.
John Rhys-Davies, Marina Sirtis, Heather Pease and Craig Fairbrass star in this independent film from Tristan Loraine and Leofwine Loraine. The film follows the tale of a British SAS officer who is caught between politics and her duty to country when she is captured during an operation.
Captain Jill Mandelson is captured after the British Prime Minister gives away their units position to an Afganistan Prince who is asking for revenge on the unit who killed the nephew of the Afghanistan King. The Prince receives the location of a nearby unit just because the unit that killed the nephew is out of the country and this SAS unit is still in Afghanistan.
The unit is thought to be dead and they even notify the families but two months later an Italian Special Forces who was investigating the incident find her. Italian intelligence officers were spying on the Afghan Prince and overheard the meeting between the British Prime Minister and the Prince.
After two months of torture by those holding her the Captain is rescued by the Italian Special Forces unit who had tracked her down from the initial agents finding her location. Captain Mandelson is discharged from the British military as she is suffering from post traumatic stress and is welcomed home by her sister Kimberley, also played by Heather Pease.
The Prince is worried that word will get back to his King who will take his revenge out on the Prince because the real unit who killed his nephew was not dealt with. When Captain Mendelson returns home the Prince finds out when and where she will be going and arranges to have her killed.
The Captains sister is dating an Italian who has contacts inside the Italian intelligence and shows her the information about the capture and rescue. Police find the Captain dead from an apparent suicide but the sister knows different and works to prove what really happened to her sister.
Kimberley kidnaps the assistant to the Prime Minister who was also in on the capture of Captain Mendelson and uses her to reveal the truth over the internet. Kimberley Mendelson drugs the assistant with a venom that will kill her and as the venom begins its attack on the assistants body by bleeding her to death she tells all.
31 North 62 East is a great film and a really well written drama that ends with a big twist that I will not reveal and plays loose with the fact of one actor playing two roles. The movie is well done even if the budget was low, it makes a great statement to what some of these independent film makers could really do with a good budget.
I received a review copy DVD so it only had stereo sound in Dolby Digital 2.0 that sounded great even for stereo, picture was also good and of course my version does not have any bonus features. The movies premise of a political leader selling out a unit for a politic deal is one that has been done before but the ending of this film was very well done.
I highly recommend this as a rental if you can find it but it does make a good enough purchase if you like political thrillers with a twist. Check out 31 North 62 East at its website of the same name which is available at Amazon and other movie sites.
