In a shocking episode Sept. 28 of the MTV show “Teen Mom,” viewers witnessed a scene between Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley in which Portwood is seen punching, kicking and screaming at Shirley. According to OK! Magazine, their 23-month-old daughter, Leah, was standing by their feet at the time of the altercation. In an exclusive episode on RadarOnline.com , Anderson Public Information Officer Mitch Carroll stated “We were made aware of the domestic abuse following the episode that aired on MTV.” An investigation by the local authorities in Anderson, Indiana, was reportedly launched.
In an interview with US Weekly, Portwood tells readers that she is facing her anger issues and they are in couples counseling. She is reportedly working with a counselor to help her with anger management.
Raising a child is never an easy task, but it is one of the most rewarding things a person can do with her life. The importance of giving your child a safe and happy upbringing cannot be stressed enough. When you are also constantly in the public eye, you have another added dimension that has to be handled appropriately.
In some circumstances, when things can’t be worked out with the parents, they find themselves single parents. Some famous single celebrity parents include Sandra Bullock, Elin Nordgren, Bristol Palin, Jamie Lynn and Britney Spears, Jodie Foster, Kate Gosselin, Angelina Jolie, and Ricky Martin, to name a few.
Sandra Bullock, Elin Nordgren and Kate Gosselin are three examples of mothers who have found themselves in predicaments where they were faced with a highly publicized report of their marriage problems. Each of these women has beautiful children they love and care for. When all the drama unfolded around them, keeping the children as their top priority is something they have all done.
While circumstances are different for Amber, as they are for every individual, some of the things that can be learned from these celebrity parents can be applied to her situation. These moms were in a situation that no doubt left them with lots of feelings of anger, bitterness and resentment. Struggling to see past these can be incredibly difficult. But one thing is clear: They each made the choice that they would put their children first.
In an article on CNN, details were given regarding Sandra Bullock filing for divorce with her husband of five years, Jesse James, after his marital infidelities were brought to light. Behind the scenes, they started the adoption process for a little boy. As stated in the article, James made the decision to step back and allowed Bullock to continue the adoption on her own. While all kinds of media coverage followed the divorce proceedings, the adoption and circumstances surrounding the child were kept quiet. In this situation, the well-being of the child and his best interests were what was done.
In a highly publicized media flurry, we were given more details than most cared to know about the Tiger Woods scandal, in which he was found to have committed many adulterous affairs. Elin Nordegren, the former Mrs. Woods, spoke openly and honestly about how she wanted the perfect family life for her children. She was very conscientious and protective over the children, and very clearly put them first. Through it all, she remained very stable and secure to those kids.
Kate Gosselin, star of reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” had a lot of her drama unfold directly on the screen. Viewers could see the stress and strain on the kids as things so drastically changed around them. After much media coverage, their divorce became final in December of 2009. TLC converted the show to “Kate Plus 8,” which shows her struggles and triumphs as a single mom.
Being a single parent, even in the short term, has lots of challenges and obstacles to overcome daily. Compound this with the fact of being a teenager, and it’s easy to see that Portwood has a difficult road ahead of her. One of the important things is that she has acknowledged that she has anger issues. This is a crucial first step to getting help. By working with a counselor, hopefully Amber will learn different ways to channel her anger in a more positive way.
An important thing for her to remember is that she has someone in her life who is more important than anything, including herself. That is her daughter, Leah. Her daughter looks to her to provide a safe environment and to be a role model for her. How she acts teaches her daughter how she should act when she grows up. When Amber feels the need to express her anger negatively, she has to think about the immediate and future effect this will have on her daughter. Does she want her daughter to be that way toward people? Does she want her daughter to grow up in an environment filled with shouting and violence? Or does she want to nurture her, provide her with a safe and loving environment and show her that she is a strong person who can be counted on?
