Remember Jennifer Mee? Probably not by name. She was better known as “Hiccup Girl” in 2007. Jennifer Mee originally gained fame when she was just 15 years old. After her five-week ordeal of non-stop hiccups ended, she dropped off the radar, only to pop up again recently. This time for something a little more serious… murder.
Gaining such a huge amount of fame when you’re young can be hard. We’ve seen many child actors struggle with it as they grow up and realize that their 15 minutes of fame are up. Some deal with it fine, but others crave the attention. Just like young children may do when they want someone attention, celebrities act out in order to gain the fame and popularity they need. A select few celebrities go bad. These celebrities will do anything for the attention, including the unthinkable, murder.
Celebrities Gone Bad: Juan-Carlos Cruz
Take, for example, Juan-Carlos Cruz. Most celebrities gain fame for gaining weight, but Cruz got it for losing it. After losing over 40 pounds on the Discovery Channel’s “Health Body Challenge,” to be exact. After that, he appeared on multiple TV series which eventually led him to become a celebrity chef. Cruz cooked for many famous celebrities, and he also hosted “Calorie Commando” and “Weighing.”
Cruz is the perfect example of a celebrity gone bad. He started out as a normal, decent person, but after he lost the weight, he started to become famous. When the fame of being on Discovery’s “Health Body Challenge” wore off, he landed his own show. When that wore off, Cruz needed to do something that would get him attention.
On May 13, 2010, Cruz approached three homeless men and asked them to kill his wife for $1,000. The homeless men agreed, but then went to the cops, who then arrested Cruz.
Cruz now says that he was doing his wife a favor. She was suicidal over not being able to have kids, and her death would be mercy for her. Juan-Carlos Cruz is expected to plead guilty to solicitation of murder and agree to nine years in prison.
Celebrities Gone Bad: Angela Dorian
Celebrities turning bad and attempting murder after their 15 minutes of fame are up is sadly not that uncommon. Another example of celebrities gone bad is Victoria Vetri. Vetri, or Angela Dorian as she also goes by, was chosen as Playmate of the Month in 1967. This later led to her also being chosen as Playmate Of The Year in 1968. After that, Dorian started landing multiple acting roles and was nominated for many awards, including new sex symbol on the Hollywood horizon in 1971. Things seemed to be going great, but trouble was brewing.
On Oct. 16, 2010, Dorian was charged with attempted murder after shooting her boyfriend at close range. Cops say that they believe Dorian and her boyfriend were having an argument that led to the shooting. Dorian has yet to make any comments on the attempted murder, and currently remains in jail, unable to pay the $1 million bond.
Celebrities Gone Bad: OJ Simpson
You can’t think about celebrities gone bad without thinking of the most famous murder case in US history: OJ Simpson.
Simpson use to be a famous football player on top of the world. Everyone knew his name and everyone loved him. That all changed in June of 1994, when OJ Simpson was accused of murder.
While OJ Simpson was cleared of all charges against him, it definitely changed him as a person. He used to be one of the many celebrities whom everyone looked up to and loved. After the trial, a lot of his fans started to question his innocence.
Simpson is a unique example of celebrities gone bad. While he was cleared of all charges, he stopped playing football and was no longer in the spotlight. After being a famous celebrity for so long, OJ Simpson seemed to have trouble adjusting to this.
In Simpson’s search for attention and fame, he wrote a book titled “If I Did It,” in which he puts himself in the hypothetical situation of him committing the murder. This attracted a lot of media attention and gave Simpson the attention he needed.
Unfortunately, this didn’t last for long. On Nov. 20, 2006, a statement was issued stating that the book had been canceled. Once again, OJ Simpson was fading out of the spotlight.
Just one year later, he reemerged, this time because of an armed robbery charge in Las Vegas. While this did put him back in the spotlight, it also cost Simpson his freedom, and he is currently spending 33 years in prison.
Celebrities go bad all the time. With the spotlight always on them, they’re forced to either be perfect, be horrible, or go unnoticed. When celebrities are forced to go unnoticed for too long, this can result in them doing unthinkable crimes. The sad thing is this only gives them another 15 minutes of fame before they go unnoticed again. All we can do is sit back and watch and hope that the celebrities we know and love won’t go as bad as Juan-Carlos Cruz, OJ Simpson, Angela Dorian, and now Jennifer Mee have.
