I became a freelance web content writer in October of 2006. In 2007, I’d heard about Associated Content but thought I’d wait to see how other freelancers did there before I risked it. I decided to write for Helium and other clients instead. I finally held my breath and took the AC plunge in February, 2010.
No Big Secret
A strange debate on Helium’s community forums finally made up my mind. I’d discovered a Helium writer that had placed about 30 articles verbatim up on eHow’s website. I asked Helium if this was plagarism. The Helium staff said I was free to republish my Helium articles wherever I wished.
So that’s one reason why I’ve been able to get to 500 articles in – let’s see – eight months. I already had the rough drafts over at Helium or from my personal blog. I then revise the articles to fit Associated Content’s Standards, fix typos and do any fact updates on the topic since it first appeared on Helium or wherever.
The page view results and performance payments here at Associated Content have been underwhelming. I still have no idea how AC writers with half the amount of articles I have get two, three or four more times more page views than I do.
But one AC writer, Michael “Mr. Technical” Hewitt, suggested I apply to be a Featured Contributor or FC. I applied to be a Pets FC and was accepted in August. Or was it July? Anyway, I did original articles for AC as assigned and got paid a lot more than performance payments. I was also happily surprised to get up front payments for a couple of articles on attending three Peter Gabriel concert rehearsals.
And then earlier this month I discovered I was named Best of AC in the Pets category for 2010. How that happened, I have no idea. But it was a nice surprise. So, of course, it’s no surprise that none of my top five articles have anything to do with pets. Still scratching my head over that one. (Ow.)
Anyway, The Top Five
I’m sure it comes as no shock that the top two best articles of mine have to with Peter Gabriel and not pets. Well, I’m certain there are a lot of us that wish we had our own Peter Gabriel as a pet, but I’m afraid there is no Peter Gabriel breed. If there was, I’d never leave the house again.
How to Meet Peter Gabriel is by far and away the AC reader’s favorite article in my bunch. I’ve been sent a rumor that Real World Studios (which Gabriel owns) has read the article. Perhaps the Real World staff need pointers. But I did publish this while Gabriel was in the middle of the second leg of his New Blood tour. I have been told that a few fans that read this article did get to meet Gabriel and he lived up to the article’s expectations. Well, whaddya know!
Soundcheck Experience – Peter Gabriel at Radio City Music Hall 5/3/2010 is the runner-up. Unfortunately, I made a major typo in the title. The events happened on 5/2 and not 5/3. Since this was an article with an up-front payment, I have not been able to change that glaring boo-boo.
Finding Fee-Free Short Story Contests was a reworked Helium article. And apparently there are a lot of story writers and Peter Gabriel fans out there in AC land hungering after free contests. Good luck.
What Scorpio Women Need to Know About Love. Yes, I’m a Scorpio and I know more about love than Dr. Ruth (sadly.) This was a rejected article from Helium Marketplace because the client was not satisfied that I was a “professional horoscope writer.” They give out college degrees for this stuff??? Color me baffled.
Cymbalta Side Effects and Withdrawal Symptoms was another reworked Helium article. I’m guessing that this is the most popular medication that Scorpio women and/or Peter Gabriel fans take. (Insert your own joke here.)
