This is my favorite fruit smoothie–just fresh and frozen fruit, that’s all, and a couple of ice cubes.
Ingredients: 4 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice
10 chunks frozen cantaloupe
2-3 ice cubes
Pour the fresh orange juice into a small blender. Add the frozen cantaloupe chunks. Pulse until blended. Add the ice cubes and pulse again until the ice cubes are crushed with the smoothie. Pour into a glass and enjoy! You can always add fresh strawberries and/or pineapple to the blend. USE ONLY FRESH FRUIT. Canned and processed fruits and juices are nothing but sugar and the nutrients have been cooked out!! AND they often have more calories, more carbs, preservatives, and added sugar! The Lord gave us perfect fruits~~why on God’s Green Earth would we want to “improve” His Creation? Trust me, it is not an improvement. It is a travesty to your health.
Okay, I know some of you like the nutritional content. A orange-cantaloupe slush smoothie as I have outlined here has approximately less than 130 calories (I have erred on the HIGH side of caution–probably has less) and less than 25 carbs, of which much is fiber. If you add the five strawberries, then you would have less than 30 extra calories and less than 6 extra carbs. That would make a total of less than 160 calories and less than 31 grams of carbs. Let’s say you add fresh pineapple chunks to the mix, you would then add less than approximately 40 more calories and less than 10 grams of carbs.
Many diabetics think they cannot consume fruit juice. But this is simply not accurate. Fruit IS tricky; I admit it. But you have to go with the fresh and do not mix it with other foods, especially high-starch foods. Let’s compare: One cup of oatmeal has approximately 150 calories and has around 26 grams of carbs. Do you see what I am saying? The smoothie with orange and cantaloupe has less calories and less carbs than a bowl of oatmeal. And that is provided you are not adding anything TO the oatmeal. In this way, it is important to know calories and carbs to enlighten yourself and see that you CAN have fresh fruit. I am not saying oatmeal is not good for you–it certainly is!
I am offering an alternative that will be full of fresh fruit! I freeze my own cantaloupe for smoothies: as far as I know you cannot purchase it frozen. It is so simple; it is just fruit! Nothing else! You really don’t need to add anything to it, at all. Just freeze it in chunks in resealable plastic bags!
